I remember a little while ago kirsty hawkshaw was asking for donations to get an album started , and she got thrown under the bus for it , and now its like gofundme pages and other sites like that have really taken off where reputable artist (de la soul, etc.) Have raised tons and tons of money to put music out ..including those that have gone platinum in the past ...and receive no sort of back lash for it ....i don't get it .

I think this explains alot:

When was she asking for money ? Might have been a shift in public paradigm as opposed to the trance community being super critical ( all though all of us trance addicts are, i dont think its representative of all trance fans). I dont think any crowd funding (few exceptions like radio heads album) was very popular pre 2012.
I may be wrong though

she made a facebook post like back in 2009 or something, i remember it being posted here, and the comments were just straight disdain.
she was definitely before her time, when it comes to stuff like this, but maybe if she tried it with a different approach today, it would turn out differently.

Interesting, alot of variables at play. the whole landscape of the music industry was a little different. There is alot more speration between the artist and music kaels now. Perhaps people thought why do you want more money from us when your signed with a large label. Now alot of artists employ a loss leader strategy and distribute alot of their music for free. And in turn, the fans are more inclined to show support by financing new projects because they perceive a larger percentage of their donated money going directly to hard costs like overhead as opposed to lining the pockets of executives.
What is the reason you think?
P.S also because she was ahead of her time with the whole crowdfunding she took alot of heat. Being the first to be different , that often happens. Now crowd funding is so popular its different. Maybe if she would have included more incentives such as having the people that donate preview tracks, get exclusive tickets, and other premium content ( bonus tracks and signatures and pictures ) then she would have had more success.

Crowdfunding guarantees donators a product at the end, or their money back if it is unsuccessful. As far as I remember, the essence of Kirsty Hawkshaw's appeal was: 'I could do with a new studio, fancy giving me some money?'
