Your favorite "character" compressors? (pg. 2)

I bought U-He's Presswerk not too long ago and man, that compressor is a beast, great character, it can emulate just about any type of compressor and it can be clean or characterful, pretty much anything you need, best sounding compressor I've used and since I got it, I haven't touched anything else. There are many compressors I love, but I don't need them anymore, they did a great job on this one.

For the punchy, gluey SSL sound I defer to my SB4001 from Serpent Audio every time, no questions asked.

It's a tie between UA's Vari-Mu and Fairchild MK2 when I'm after the Tube sound.

And for saturation based compression, I either turn to the Studer which I have on every channel or add an instance of the VSM-3 Mix Satellite plug which provides mid-side processing and specific 2nd and 3rd order harmonic drive.

Lastly, when I want the traditional 1176 sound I gravitate to my Lindell Audio 77X with UA's Rev A Blue Stripe 1176 emulation taking a close second. So damn smooth.

That one has been on my wish list for a while. The next time U-he gives out discount codes, I'll probably pick it up (even though I really don't need any more f'ing compressors :p).

Press werk sure looks like i wanna give it a try.

Try the demo, but make sure you check out the manual and/or check out their video's, there are some settings on there that aren't on most compressors, so to get the most out of it, you wanna really learn every feature it has. And make sure to check out the presets, they have pre-built presets that emulate other compressors, like the "all 4 button" trick, ect... , anyway, doesn't hurt to try the demo! :)

Thanks, will def check it out.

+1 for Presswerk, its absolutely beastly character wise when you enable DPR and start playing with saturation. Not to mention it has many unique features and functions for normal compression.

Don't use one. Absolutely hate the emphasis on compression in the modern industry; it's a lazy man's limiter and generally makes music sound like .:whip:
Just learn to master your audio properly. Sure, it's more difficult than selecting some crap preset that brickwall limits your track to make your audio so headache-inducingly loud it'll blow the windows out at the cost of sounding like complete garbage, but it's well worth it.

djnitride
kosmotika, not sure I follow you... A limiter is just a type of compressor and is more often than not abused to make music sound .

I didn't understand what he meant.
