Amazon FireTV vs Roku vs Apple TV (pg. 2)

You dont need a laptop for xbmc, its over wifi to your modem to the servers that host the content. Its new age piracy bruv, torrents can get flagged but dont think xbmc servers can :} I'd always take the open ecosystem over the proprietary in terms of media :}
Serial Killer
apple tv 2nd gen jailbroken with xbmc on there...
EarnYourKeep
firestick w/kodi

Thanks again Guys.

I had totally forgotten about the AT2 jailbreak, because at one point the boxes were going for silly money ($400+) but a quick check on ebay shows tons are now being sold for under $200. I may go that route. They're solid as apparently.

I have it on good authority that Apple have paid not to have the ATV3 jailbroken. They basically made a more lucrative offer to the guys than they'd ever get from people paying for the hack.

Otherwise, I'm leaning towards the roku.....

@msz - I'd still need a host for XMBC/Kodi. Firestick would do it though as EYK said....

Edit: . Forgot ATV2 is only 720p, That will look on my 50". Looks like it's a Roku or firestick then.

Anyone got the firestick?
DJ RANN
Hmm, so guys are selling fully loaded firesticks and Fire's on ebay for $20 more than the price of the unit by itself.

Seems like it might be a plan....

lol P@nsat ftw. I loved my little 3500 & Viewsat HD box

Why not just build a little HTPC? I built one using my old gamer PC build from 2010 but just added a GTX 970 for graphics for couch gaming & added 5 HDD's for storage/server duties. A PC will do everything you want and beyond.

I've been considering it but honestly, I need something that is really easy to use and has little to zero possibility of crashing. There's times when my missus just wants to switch on the TV and see something, not about with software updates and locating EPG's.

Sadly all of the HTPC interfaces are ing horrible.

One thing the apple TV does really well is just provide a simple interface, the thing never crashes (well maybe twice in 3 years) and the video quality is great.

She ing hates all things apple (and I hate ATV for only allowing mp4's) so I'm thinking a firestick will do it....

The Firestick seems to work pretty well, so if you have to deal with your girl then yea go with the easy setup for sure. I don't have any crashes at all and it runs 24/7 so I can remote into it from anywhere. I have xbmc installed and it works well, but I never use it. It's fun to have it and I like browsing the web on my big TV from the couch, but I also have Uverse for TV.

Thanks for the info.

I'm thinking of going for a full Fire just because one of the TV's I want to use in in my guest house and it's a good 90 ft from the wifi extender. I generally find those smaller stick type things don't do well on the wifi front, so i may need to hard wire/ethernet it.

Could do the stick for the living room though....

You can load XBMC onto a Fire TV, I did that with mine. It's fantastic. I would also recommend you set up a NAS then run a web app called "Sick Beard", which you can program to download your shows directly to your NAS whenever a new episode becomes available... you then play the shows through XBMC... essentially it's a PVR for pirates.

As for the Fire TV itself... it's pretty good; very fast, nice interface, lots of apps available + games (not that I've bothered with any games). The only issue I have with it is that it prioritizes content through Amazon over everything else, which is great if you buy content through Amazon but I don't so it's just more stuff to ignore.

thanks again. I ended up getting a fully loaded Kodi FireTV off ebay and....

....., this thing is incredible. I mean every single thing I could ever want. It's crazy. I was looking up obscure shows that never made it to DVD due to licensing wars and they;re all on there. There's thing that aren't even out in the cinema yet in full HD. It's bonkers. I can;t believe I've been struggling with my ty Apple TV's for so long.

Thanks for the tip about sick beard Moral Hazard. I'll check it out. I heard there's issues with streaming from a NAS and you have to mess about with scripts to see which config works best.

May give it a try but I'm thinking just to install plex to stream the content from my Imac on the wifi network.

If you have any advice on how to do this easily via Kodi then I'd be mighty apprecaitive....
DJ RANN
Ok, so I'm loving this amazon fire TV with Kodi but I'm having problems with reliable HD feeds.

Channel1 seems to have a selection but nearly all the TV show feeds are SD or worse.

I've only done a slight exploration on the others so far but similar story.

Are there any addons that really offer HD content for current shows?
