You're right.
A "serious writer" must know how to filter the content he or she is exposed to on a daily basis.
Lurking and posting on TA is the one habit I'm still trying to kick in this regard. |

| Copy edit: Mom's spaghetti. You're a slightly more literate version of Paulino. |

Let's hope you ascend to the level of James Joyce sooner rather than later then. |

It's a pretty simple formula: don't add people you don't like, delete anyone who annoys you, keep your friends list closely cropped and Like and follow everything that interests you culturally or socially. You end up with an all-in-one resource for keeping up with music, film-makers, authors, events and friends.

I DO do all of the above, yet the still finds it's way through. Facebook has gotten increasingly good at filtering stuff I don't want through to my news feed. The amount of selfies of people I don't even know that pop up in my feed, simply because a mutual friend from my list likes or comments on them, is staggering. It's like walking through a neighbourhood where nobody owns blinds or turns the lights off.
I do agree about FB's usefulness, otherwise I wouldn't have it to begin with. It just seems I spend more of my time on FB blocking/hiding/deleting stuff I don't want to see than actually enjoying it for it's benefits. Which is why I'm thinking about at least deleting the app from my phone. |

| Conversely, what I actually enjoy about FB is the way it connects strangers (friends of friends, etc) together to enjoy conversation or constructive debate. People who, otherwise, you'd never really have a good opportunity to meet and engage with. It definitely does close the loop on like minded individuals/mutual friends and whatnot, makes the world smaller, so to speak. |

I read that as "meet and enrage" at first.
I'm not suggesting you can block out all the annoying bull on Facebook, because it's always going to be there. It was nigh-on intolerable to log in during the election the other month. And I understand why some people don't use it. What I won't accept is some self-regarding wanker dismissing it as mere junk food for the mind and giving himself a pat on the back as though he's living off the grid and has joined a ing commune by not having a Facebook account. |

| Sometimes it's definitely "meet and enrage" lol. |

I joined FB for the sole purpose of contacting my younger half sister, who I had not seen since she was a baby and our father was killed.
She had no idea she even had two sisters, as I suspected, but we have maintained an online relationship for the past 7 years.
Last night I messaged her and invited her to my wedding, even though we haven't met IRL yet - and she's going to come!!

I don't mean to pry but why is it going to take 7 years to see her? |

Sad to hear about your father. But great news about your sister.
You gals will be sharing some good energy during that time. |
