Which one is better? Have both stood the test of time?
Both are seminal in their respective ways, but NORTH will always be tops for me. Something about that strangely organic flow to the track selection... without borders...
But listening to south album.. @37:40!? yeah....
Thoughts?

I've listened to North a lot more. Despite the theme of the mix it's always been the definitive summertime set to me. The track titles and samples conjure up images of far-flung destinations, from the Amazon rainforest to the mountains of Tibet.
South... I can't remember the last time I listened to that disc start to finish, to be honest. It starts out great but they badly lose the flow with that extended Pro-Tools faffery between The Gloom and Wavespeech. Both are great tracks in isolation but this is an early example of, I suspect, Sasha getting a bit too caught up in the kind of computer re-edit trickery that blighted his Ableton period. It feels like a long and murky stretch between the gorgeous Underworld remix of Sound System and return to trancey uplift with The Phoenix. Similarly on GU:013 I get incredibly frustrated by the stretch of Bluefish -> Godspeed -> Dreamstate, because all are excellent tracks in full and yet are subjected to bizarre transitions full of fiddly editing in a way that doesn't enhance any of them.
I've said many times though that South is actually way ahead of its time. Although North may have popularised the idea of the comedown compilation filled with old favourites, the tracklist is basically one of those Ambient Planet 7 comps from the early '90s but with clever mixing. South, on the other hand, is a dark prog mix a good four years before dark prog really became a thing.
And I can't finish this ramble without noting that NE2: East Coast is my favourite disc in the series. Doi-oing - Blue into the Live Mix of Little Bullet is absolute audio sex.

North!!! Despite the fact that the South has the best finisher, North always gets me. Also I preffer South during driving :toocool:
