An interesting read here -- rather than copy/paste/re-format the whole thing I'll let those of you interested read/paste the parts you think are worth discussing. I came across this in 2011 and saved it as a PDF and just found it again -- can't remember if it was ever a thread here (maybe).

| I don't find these attempts to write academic papers on electronic music interesting, this one included, for the simple reason that they must assume a reader who has no familiarity with the scene - namely the teacher or professor who will be marking them. The majority of this paper is spent introducing the electronic music scene from the ground up for the benefit of someone who knows nothing about electronic music. Tell me something I don't know! |

Yeah, we need a critical mass of sociologists doing scholarship on dance music so they can have their own conferences, develop their particular jargon, and write things that presuppose a bunch of background knowledge about the scene.
