There always was, but it's more confined to Europe - Belgium, France, The Netherlands, Czech Republic...

tekno and acid is pretty "underground," but I may be the only one here who listens to that sort of stuff. And they don't really have tekno parties in places like the US or AU or the UK, afaik.

They recently had a Drop Bass reunion party that my friend attended, but it was pretty wack, from what I heard - people playing mostly acid housey stuff, nothing like in the old days or what's being currently played in the underground scene in Europe.

If that was a real genre, this is what I'd imagine it sound like:

In all seriousness, maybe it's because I haven't been looking hard enough but most of what's popular nowadays seem to be continuations on things that were popular the last few years. Big room techno, that 'man trance' (cringeworthy name, but you know, like Tale of Us, Maceo Plex... I really like this stuff), commercial deep house (Robin Schulz, Nora En Pure), and of course future house. Which seems to be where all the electro house guys from the mid 2000's ended up.

I think we're at the point of the electronic music popularity boom-and-bust cycle where the super commercialized stuff (EDM) is dying out and the populace is losing interest. This is the point where the more underground sounds thrive a bit more and genre creativity will stagnate a tad, although it'll mean a lot of mags will write how dance music is lacking its next big thing... until the next big thing comes out and the cycle repeats.
