so my friend put me in toucb with this young singer. she has a lot of potential and a beautiful voice and had even had a couple years of vocal coaching. her piano and guitar skills aren't the greatest but I know she'll need to work on developing those if she plans on writing songs which she does. I'm going to basically ghost produce her first couple songs and help with the song writing process but I'm not 100% sure how to proceed to begin her song writing and artistic development process. her voice is totally solid though that's for sure. it will be a breeze to work with. although I'll be instrumental in helping her write and produce her first songs I am going to do everything I can to not only involve her in the creative process but have here responsible for it. the production itself I can do pretty much anything but I want her to be involved in the creative decisions and gradually have her doing it autonomously.but to do that she has to have the skill and confidence necessary to accomplish that. she won't really be doing dance music not at this point anyway so it's pretty new territory and it's a wonderful opportunity to make a difference. she definitely has the voice to make great things happen.
I guess I'm just looking for ideas and advice on how to help her develop her song writing ability, which as we all know is not an easy thing. but she has to start somewhere, and what better time than now |

Pick a pop track from before 2000. Anything that has at least a bridge in another key. That isn't one sharp flat away. Learn every note from every instrument and understand what chords are used and why. Graph the song with a pencil to help learn form. Every song is pretty much using the same template.
Anything produced by Mutt Lang will have enough complexity hidden in its seemingly simple arrangement to challenge most,
Ultimately she needs to know her range, and write for her voice. Learning how to manipulate keys so that you can end up a the last chorus in her chest voice.
At that age, the most important thing would just be vocal health. But that takes a professional.
I would probsbly tell her to have perspective and be interesting. Song writing is monkey work. I've done vocal coaching. Some people are just better at being told what to do. |

So she doesn't want to do pop and she doesn't want to do EDM.
What does she want to do? Is she more folk? Or more rock? Or classically trained?
It all depends on what she wants to do.... |
