So I was watching Giuseppe Ottaviani's Luminosity Beach Festival set on youtube. First thought was, cool, he brought a lot of gear with him, synths and stuff.
I like the set but while watching I got the impression he wasn't using the synth live e.g. @26:45
But I'm not an expert, so what do guys you think?
I asked the question at youtube and it was gone within an eye-blink :)

Looks real, hes playing it safer by having a pattern trigger quantized on the grid from each key root instead of the actual sound so he doesnt have to be in time.

I don't get it. So basically he can play whatever he wants and it all sounds like the original?

No man, he has to play the right notes, just doesnt have to tap them perfectly as they are in the track. Just pay attention to the video.
Sorry im not good at explaining things... take a quick glance at what a step sequencer is.
Also a monophonic appregiator can do the same. The guy wants a perfect product while not risking his live timing, so he uses aides.

I'm gonna be honest I dont care if someone plays notes live vs. pre recorded track. It doesnt matter to me as a dancer and it wouldnt make me choose to go see one DJ over another, all else being equal.
As long as the DJ is thoughtfully choosing and programming tracks based on the energy level and vibe in the room, I'm good.

I did pay attention.
Watch full screen @8:48 when he bends over he stops playing and the melody continues and from 15:30 - 17:30. He changes octave but you can't hear the difference. At 15:52 left hand is used also, but I wouldn't know what sound belongs to that.
@31:10 he plays chords and then the track continues again with chords without playing. So he prepared the parts where he played chords?
To be honest, to me that looks like a lot of work preparing all this. Acting like you play is easier.

Yes and no.
If there is a great light show I can understand a DJ needs to prepare a set. And as long as people have a great time, nobody cares.
But we're not the average party people here. I rather hear a DJ screw it up now and then, than getting the impression he's acting like playing live while he isn't.
A DJ should DJ, especially for the money the big names get. My sister's boyfriend even wanted to punch a DJ for faking badly last week. He only plays vinyl himself (old-school house), so he can't fake, well not that easy.

The 8 minute mark does seem a little strange, its hard to say without full seeing his setup. The octave one, It looks like he presses the button on the controller to raise the octave via button press, then presses it lower so he can use his left hand. Gotta give him the benefit of the doubt without fully seeing how his setup is wired in his daw.
If you're wanting to see a good live show, you're obviously barking up the wrong tree, just move on.

Looks like he uses the same setup to me.

He another set from 2013, also a good set, at least I like it.

But I'm still not convinced, just can't give him the benefit of the doubt although I do like his music and sets an awful lot. He's really very good or very good doing as if.
Point is, if the synth is not real, the step to a totally pre-recorded set is small too.
I remember Ben Liebrand saying, I don't have time to do a lot of dancing and stuff. Playing live with 4-6 cdj's is hard work, well, using multiple at the same time he meant.
This looks more complicated to me to preform live.
I wasn't searching for a good live performance, just noticed and wondered. Thanks for your giving your view on this.
