What happened to video games

I think im one of those people who believes that originality in games has hit a severe decline. Honestly its makes sense though. I mean how many new ideas can you come up with? There really does have to be a limit to it. To me game originality has hit a huge brick wall. Too many games like other games, nothing brand spanking new catching my eye, and good graphics can only take a game so far. Case in point Final Fantasy X. Great graphics, but the game was just one too many of the same type of thing for me i think. I dunno maybe its just me getting old (im 22). Ive been playing games since i was 6 when i first played Mario 1. Maybe its just natural for me to bore of it. I guess im just curious if other people are going through this. I mean this couldnt have happened at a better time for me because im about to enter the real world after this year and its gonna help alot that im not addicted to video games like i used to be. But it just bugs me that ive lost my passion for them.

Who knows maybe there will be some fresh new ideas that grasp me in the future, but right now i really doubt it, and its kinda ty cause it eliminates one of the things i used to do when boredom set in.

Maybe I'm getting old he says...

Buddy...try being 32 and seeing where video games CAME FROM and you wouldn't be saying the same thing. :p

Mine you, you do have the point that lately in the last few years, games have sort of hit a plateau of sorts...

illusion, maybe check out age of mythology?

I think that as games get visually better and gameplay stays stagnant of course we are going to notice games arnt as good. As well as the the fact, the older we get the more we want to be satisfied. I remember being 10 and totally losing my self in older games (im 19 now) and today i look back on them and think how poor they look now. I think it has something to do with having more imagination at a younger age.

Well, I'm 23 and my first ever video game was some Atari BS where you get to play AIR HOCKEY and PAC MAN. Those old video games eventually disappeared and Nintendo ended up taking over. I ended up playing Super Mario Bros. 1,2, and 3. It was the best 2 dimensional game I ever played.

I never played video games after that. That was until last week, when VICE CITY came out. My friend was going crazy for it. Stores around my neighborhood said that it was out of stock. I had to drive an hour to nowheresville to get this game.

This game got me so addicted, that I actually felt like I was still playing when I stepped outside of the house. I saw a car go by and though about running after it. My dreams are super-crazy. I rank this game as one of the best 3 dimensional games ever.

Of course I could be wrong. I haven't checked out the other games yet. But then I'd be insane, wouldn't I?

Exponent I couldn't agree with you more. This is precisely why I spend the majority of my time using Mame to relive the past and play all those games I grew up around. I have a dedicated Mame box that sits behind my TV which runs Mame in addition to every other emulator you can think of so I can play all the old consoles I grew up with. I'll try newer games on the PC and the newer consoles now and again, but I return to old school games over and over. There is just something magical about these older games that makes them so special.
