Quitting Drinking (pg. 3)

I drink too much because the drugs are here.
DJ RANN
By European standards I'm a moderate to heavy drinker but by American standards I'm a a full blown alchy.

It's really difficult for me to understand people who have a problem with drink, as I've always been able to drink heavy then go on a break - essentially take it and leave it whenever I want. I've never really been able to understand those who can't function without it - it just seems so obvious they have a psychological problem that drink is a crutch for, so when you know that, why not just work through the crutch. You know drinking that way is a problem so where's the disconnect. I get it if you've got PTSD or had major trauma in your life, but those that just gradually become alcoholics can see what's happening and ignore it or just go with it. Really not difficult to spot the problem.

And I hate all that bull like "i have an addictive personality". We all ing do to some extent. Man up, admit you just like getting blasted.

One thing I have and never will do, is drink by myself, unless it's maybe a single glass with dinner if I happen to be alone (which is never, apart from maybe travelling). As with jack and lews respectively, it's purely a social and culinary thing for me. I work ing hard and there's nothing nicer than enjoying a few bottles of wine with good food and good company.

I won't lie and say when i drop the booze, the first night or so I don't quite sleep as well, but it's also not to the point where I start chatting to Tyler Durden. There's just an inherent time and place thing - there's time I'll knock back 3 bottles of wine with the missus after a hard day, then there's whole month long periods where I just leave it.

The bit that worries me is the long term though - I drink enough that I'm going to have liver (and other) issues if I keep this up for another 15 years so it's going to have to tone a bit but then again my parents generation drink about as much and they're all in their 70's and seem to be doing just fine. If you look at the countries with high life expectancy, they're nearly all heavy win consuming countries. I think they call it the french paradox. That resveratrol is working.

Weeds not a good idea - I'm the same, i used to chuff so much but the dank here in N America is not the chill stuff, it's the trip you out and you up stuff.
hash on the other hand (if you can find it) is a different story but then you got to go the tobacco route as it's too coarse by itself.

I can't realistically see that happening to me because I just don't enjoy alcohol enough. I find no innate pleasure in being pissed. It's an effective social lubricant but in that respect it's merely a means to an end.

yeah for sure. i am just a weak individual :D

Gotta watch out for those librarians :stongue:

Seems like everyone here should be in AAA. I don't drink much because it makes me tired. I've never had a problem so it's hard to believe so many people have so little self control.

And by Finnish standards you'd be a casual drinker.

How are you doing with this?

These last two months in Mexico have been pretty heavy. I woke up today and told myself I need a break from the booze and bud.

Going to try to spend my third and final month here clean.

I'm onto tequila + pineapple + soda water now. Elixir of the gods. Best buzz and minimal hangover.
