Let us make a difference. We need to take it out of the spotlights. |

| Let's ask the question, when do you think were the best years for dance music? Your personal favorites I guess. |

90s electronica, come onnnn :p
I'm old enough to even call it "electronica" and I know a few people here are in the same league of ancient-ness as me. I won't name names, you old mofos. Anyone that lived through that, and many that didn't, would have a pretty hard time saying that the 90s wouldn't win this. I would exclude the late 90s cheesy trance thing, but I can't lie, I even liked a bunch of that.
Let's also throw in some early 2000s prog, though.
(Also, thank you for turning this thread into something useful). |

Bingo!
Though I do wonder how atx knows that next year's EDM is going to suck... I didn't receive my preview copy.... |

Music from one's teen years will always be perceived as the "best" by them. That's why I fear for the current generation.
"What's this meaningless nonsense? Back in my day we had Miley Cyrus and David Guetta, now those are some REAL artists!" |

I grew up on late 70s/80s punk and new wave. Ouch.
In the 90s, I was more into the industrial/darkwave thing, not so much into that "techno" stuff, although I did like the 90s house music. ;)
And, I still love the mid-2000s cheesy vocal trance stuff. Now that I've outed myself, will my TA ban be temporary, or permanent? |

While this is a little true in terms of normal psychology (music we're exposed to as teens has a profound effect etc), in qualitative historical terms it's very hard to argue that the 90's electronic movement is just another nostalgic bookmark.
It was a completely new type of music which had a massive impact that we're still all talking about today. Play someone uneducated ot uninitiated a classic dance track from the 90's and there's very little dispute it's something special. Then multiply that by the umber of those special tracks and you start to get some context.
The Guetta / Cyrus analogy doesn't really work because it would be like saying Nightcrawlers and Aqua were quality acts, when they were just commercial cheese and most importantly, they knew they were. No one really took that seriously then, but a lot of people go to guetta and think they're listing to serious EDM, only to look back shortly afterwards and go "what the was I listening to" *cringe*.
It's like some of these girls I hear going "oh Avicii's so cheesy" but they were all over it when top 40 hiphop got replaced by Levels and Wake Me Up.
There were also acts that put out music that has really stood the test of time and has become revered by people other genres. For instance, some acts like Orbital, The Orb, Garnier, Chems, New Order, Cold Cut, Jeff Milss, LeftField, Aphex Twin, Hawtin are looked at by a lot of high brow composers I know as legitimate artists who actually achieved something not just within their niche little genre.
But don't worry fellow bretherin, media giant SFX is going under, Live Nation will get out of EDM, and 2016 is the year when the big tacky EDM bubble imploded and calvin harris will have to make do with his giant pile of money and 25 year old girlfriend, while we take music back underground and get to chin scratch in dark basements to obscure minimal techno. EDM is dead. Long live Electronic Dance Music.
oh wait..... |

| I'd love to hear the original kind of trance make a return. Long, slowly evolving synths and repetitive patterns creating tension and release without five minute breakdowns. |
