so, what is it exactly?

it's kind of interesting, as that basically means 'deep trance' is basically normal, modern, non-bastardised trance - but there is also a definite deepness to it.
i guess this is an example. can't pick between the two mixes, so it's lucky that i don't have to :D

In practise, when people say "deep trance" they basically just mean "progressive trance" again. Trance a bit more subtle and stripped down than the general perception of the genre, but still not particularly "deep" in the grand scheme of things. Certainly, J00F and Simon Berry are unlikely to make the Basic Channel heads reach for the rolling tray any time soon.

The term deep isn't casual, just like the term uplifting, which would be the opposite. Is a matter of frequencies. Generally the average listener would use such terms to describe the feelings certain frequencies transmit him. And that's the way all sorts of "genres" spring up.

Since Fleming and Simon Berry were mentioned in this post, here are some words from Fleming describing some of his own feelings.
"To me, the real art is to hold a packed dancefloor in a groove for a sustained amount of time, they get engrossed in the hypnotic groove losing chunks of time with their eyes closed and headsdown. Tranced out. That’s where true DJ’s earn their stripes, once you have control of the floor like this, you have the musical freedom to head where you want. The energy shift is so immense as you snap them out of this groove, it’s creates an immense frizzen moment that no ‘drop’can match. Is it all about the drop…or the groove?"
To me it just sounds more like stripped down / progressive trance that doesn't focus on the big drops and energy shifts that uplifting trance has to offer, sounds more like the counterpart to it.
Here's an old compilation that came across my mind.
Always thought this track was "deep" for its time, but corny as hell now. Most tracks around then didn't really have the hypnotic, restrained qualities that make trance.
Have to agree on deep trance just being a euphemism for progressive trance.

Has anyone ever made a deeper trance track than this one? But then again, except for some of the stupid chanting in the break, it's borderline techno. Which I think is the issue at hand, if you strip trance of all the corny psychedelic stuff and cheesy melodies in the sound palette, you end up with returning to techno. So for a deep trance track, you gotta have just enough of that ethereal-psychedelic cheese factor, but not too much either, which is obviously a really hard balance to hold. I mean, even most of the stuff that people here regard as 'real' or 'deep' trance will still sound really corny to anyone not into the genre.
I think that what it comes down to, every genre is held together by a certain traditionnel sound palette. I've really noticed this when ing around with synthesis, you around until something happens and the sound morphs into something else. And if you've listened to these genres for years you just instantly know if it's, say, a 'trance' or 'techno' sound. And I think that's the issue, it's just really hard to make things sound deep with that trance palette because a lot of it is basically directly opposed to what most people perceive as 'deep' sounds.
