On a biological level people have a preference for people of a similar height once you account for gender differences (so average height guys prefer average height girls). It seems girls seem to commonly say they'd never go for a guy that is shorter than them though.

I wonder if I'm an outlier because I'm 24 centimetres taller than my wife (almost 10 inches in random units). I'm 1.77m tall (5"10') and she's 1.53m (5"). Although I've fancied some girls closer to my height when I was younger, I don't think the tallest was 1.70m (5"6')... Which I guess makes me a gnomephile :p

Not off the top of my head, but it's a quote from human behavioral biology so that's a reputable source. Google seems to be making it difficult to find articles/data that relates though.

I used to work for a major US dating website until about a year or so ago. We would collect all sorts of data on behavior patterns across the site, including communication rates. One such chart was a graph of communication rates between men and women plotted against the difference in height between the man and the woman. The chart clearly showed that the highest comm. rate occurred when the difference between the heights of the man and the woman was 4-8 inches (with the man being taller). It tapered off on either side of that difference, like a bell curve almost.
I know your question was about relationships and not comm. rates on dating websites, but thought this had some relevance here.
