I already picked up an Apollo 8 and a rackmount 500 series chassis for the holidays...

Bought myself an a7s and Sony-Zeiss FE 24-70mm F4 zoom. This is actually my very first camera. I've always just borrowed.
Dear Santa,
For Christmas, I would like either a 35mm or 55mm so I can have the camera as a compact point & shoot. Not quite sure which one I need though. The 55mm is one of the best rated autofocus lenses at dxo. If I get the 35mm, it can double as a 50mm in crop-factor mode at the expense of some resolution. But the 55mm is F1.8 vs F2.8 of the 35mm.
Also lusting for one of those Zeiss Loxias for the buttery-smooth manual focusing ring. Loxias are manual focus only.
I don't have enough photographing experience to really know what I need though. Apparently the Sony-Zeiss lenses are focus-by-wire making it irritating to pull focus on them for video work.
Oh, and I'm going to need a VideoMic Pro.
Will probably have to split these purchases over several Christmases. Don't want to be spoilt rotten.

There's your answer right there. Go for the faster lens, which should have better bokeh. That extra 1 1/3 stop can be a huge difference, especially in low light conditions. 35mm vs 55mm isn't that big a difference, since you can always (OK, usually) zoom with your feet.

Oh, are we talking about photography stuff? I just picked up a Canon 5d Mk 3, and a couple of L lenses :wtf:

Nice! I was formerly a Canon shooter and had a few L lenses, but sold most of it off after my son was born since we pretty much got used to shooting everything with our cell phones and p&s camera. When we started getting back into it seriously, we went Nikon, mostly because I found a great deal on a D7000 and some lenses, and the Canons in the same price range seemed to be focused more on video and less on photography compared to the Nikons. I still can't get used to screwing the lenses on backassward, though.

Yeah, I started with Canon years ago for exactly the same reason - I got a good deal. I have too much invested in lenses to ever change now, not that I'm unhappy with Canon at all. Picked up these latest bits of kit for a steal though! :D

Didn't realize we had some many photographers here! We might need a dedicated photo thread....
I'd love to have a full-frame sensor camera, but we still do a lot of wildlife photography, so having that cropping factor/magnification really makes a difference. That, and we also bought a Nikon P900 earlier this year (p&s with a 2000mm, yes two-ing-thousand mm optical...yes, optical...zoom lens built into it). It's ing ridiculous, especially for a $600 street price. I can walk out my front door on any clear evening and get photos of craters on the moon.

Ha, my main interest in photography is actually birds and wildlife too :p I still have my 70D body for that. No way I want to lose that much range! It turns my 300mm L prime into 480mm focal length, which is pretty respectable. The full frame will def be nice for everything else though.
And yeah, that P900 is absolutely insane
