Actually, I was reading it as you'd pronounce it (/tuːm/ in the singular) and assuming that native speakers wouldn't mind the addition of plosive between a nasal and a fricative as some speakers are wont to do just that (the ones for whom "cents" and "sense" rhyme, it might be your case?)... And exaggerating a bit :toothless (the ending result I had in mind is more like [tũts] :p)
Now, as for how I'd pronounce "tomb(s)" in Portuguese, the answer is ['tõ.bɪ(s)] (Tawm-bis) as in "Tomb Raider" ['tõbɪ 'haɪ.deh] (Tomby High Dech)... Because I speak a Southern-like variety of Portuguese in which closed vowels are preferred. I live just a few kilometres away from an isogloss where to my knowledge they favour open vowels, so maybe they'd say [tɔ̃.bɪ(s)] (the contrast between these two nasal vowels is not phonemic).
Also, Brazilian Portuguese abhors closed syllables so [tɔ̃b(s)] just could not happen (we do open exception for syllables ending with /r/ ([h] or [R] in my dialect) and /s/ because we hate rules... And because I'd hate it if my name became ['mah.kʊ.sɪ] :D). And, yes, this does mean there's no [zil] in "Brazil" (rather, there's just a diphthong in the last syllable, [ziw] or [ziu̯] depending on who's writing). |
