Must've been a JP-6, sorry.

Seriously though, what accounts for these outrageous prices nowadays? Back in 2009 you could've bought a bunch of classic Rolands for dirt cheap compared to new (and old) stuff nowadays. Are they using rare/expensive components, or are they simply looking to make a huge profit?

I think there is a misconception of how expensive these things should be.

Back in the day an original Prophet 5 or OBX would have cost $10k or more adjusted for inflation.

My feeling is that when plugins and little crap things like the Roland boutique stuff exists, the real deal synths seem expensive, but they're not.

Same thing with other tech too. People are moaning that an Oculus Rift costs $600, and they're moaning about it on their $500 iPhone.

Yeah, but just 6 or 7 years ago you could've bought an sh-101 or juno 106 for like $400 apiece. Same with lots of other classic analog gear. So I ask again - is it the parts and labor, or mainly the profit?

I think people are starting to realize the money isnt worth the paper its printed on.

yeah but what price were those synths brand new and adjusted for inflation?

and a 2nd hand Jupiter 8 costs about $7k or whatever on ebay

You should be happy a synth like this OB-6 only costs what it costs

I think it's more about the recent rise in demand, rather than inflation. You can still buy some good synths for less or the same as before (e.g. Novation KS4).

606s have been recently selling for about $350 (quite a good price) and just this week a couple of them sold for nearly $600. Insane.

Whether I'm happy or not about the OB-6 price is not the issue. I was hoping someone can answer my original question.

sorry, whats your original question? the price of a lot of old synths will fluctuate depending on whether its cool to own one or not at the present time

meanwhile, some epic sounds in this...

Edit: Ok, I just saw the original prices for the 808 and 909 in the 80's: $1,195. So I guess if this OB-6 is very poweful and good, perhaps it's not too much. Still, for that money I'd buy a few classic older synths instead.

You're comparing the price of a new synth to the used prices of much older synths.

The point is that a comparable synth to the OB6 would have cost a lot more new when it came out. In fact if you adjust for inflation even a Jupiter 8 has lost value over time.

Also, compare to the cost of other musicians. A good cello bow (excluding the cello) is about $1500. An OB6 is cheap for what it is.

Well of course, if you prefer the sound of other synths then by all means dont spend your money on this
