cities around the world where dance music thrives

We all know about the central hubs like Berlin, London and Miami.

But I'm curious about the smaller cities around the world, where perhaps the thriving dance scene has flown under the radar or just recently flourished.

What cities/towns have you visited/lived in that have a vibrant dance music scene?

I don't go out much nowadays, but I hear Brooklyn is pretty poppin' lately, what with all the Boiler Room sets and whatnot.

Pretty much all of the major UK cities: Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, Birmingham. All fairly small cities by international standards (300-700,000 people), but all very strong for their size.

I haven't been there clubbing, but from what i've heard, in Germany, Leipzig and Munich are doing very well. They've both had major clubs (MMA and IFZ) open within the last 2-3 years.

Oh, and Paris has gone ing insane in the last five years. I would say it's second only to Berlin now, the amount of parties and lineups and sheer quality is mindboggling. Also with stuff like Concrete they have quite liberal opening hours. And the amount of young kids freaking out to techno especially is massive, maybe even moreso than in Berlin right now, if you discount all the tourists.

(Still, ever Parisian I meet here in Berlin, ing hates the Paris scene :p)
Paradox Lost
The scene in San Francisco has been all but extinguished by now, along with the rest of what was once a unique cultural identity. The ever-expanding Bay Area technology boom of the past six years has resulted in skyrocketing rent prices that now rival Manhanttan's, gentrifying neighborhood after neighborhood with wave after wave of trendy, millennial technology professionals, displacing musicians, writers, artists, and whoever else can't afford to live here now.

We still naturally get all the major headliners to stop in at all the major venues each week, and there's always the occasional warehouse party, but there's no longer a local, vibrant, actual urban *scene* anymore, with LA being the closest one at 400 miles away.

Montreal scene's pretty healthy. A world class afterhours club, about 4-5 great regular hours clubs that bring quality bookings to the city, and now more then ever there's an astounding amount of private parties bringing in more obscure house and techno acts to industrial lofts and warehouses.

We got Mutek, Piknic Electronik, and Igloofest, not to mention one of the biggest "raves" in North America, Bal En Blanc. Ile Soniq is our new EDM festival, I'll never attend but attendance has been great..

Overall Montreal's a huge music city in general, but dance music has never been healthier.

I've said in previous threads that Montreal is miles away the healthiest dance music city in Canada. Most people who I've talked to from New York, Toronto, Chicago, Washington even say that it is arguably the best party city in North America based on the amount of venues which are genuine after hours and the vibes that are in them.

Toronto really blows but it's also due to city politics rather than there being lack of clubbers. There are still big EDM oriented festivals that draw enormous crowds (isn't this in every big city in the world now? .) and a couple of decent line ups for outdoor parties in the summer but other than that its pretty standard. Can't really comment on the rest of Canada as I don't travel and well, it's not exactly accessible by car to go from major city to major city (Toronto-Montreal-Ottawa being the exception).

Just came back from United States. I was in San Francisco for 1 week and couldn't find any decent event. Even São Paulo was helding a Dekmantel party while i was in US

The other week was in Vegas. I didn't event bother looking for something, after i saw a Steve Aoki and Calvin Harris outdoors while riding from the airport to the hotel.

São Paulo

To be fair, that's South America's biggest dance music scene, only rivalled by Rio's if you take the local breakbeat genres into account. And maybe Buenos Aires, as it's bigger than Rio and has more potential (never heard of anything like "Porteño Funk" though).

Not sure about that.

I believe that Argentina has a healthier scene than Brazil. I see House/Techno DJs playing more there, specially in Buenos Aires and Córdoba. The ing Guy J is a good example: he always plays there then leave South America. I think that Scuba did the same in 2015 (although he told me that he will play in São Paulo in 2016). While in Brazil, only São Paulo has some intersting events throughout the year.

I've heard amazing things about the scene in Argentina. Whenever a DJ is asked which is their favourite country to play, they all say Argentina. I'd love to go over there on a clubbing holiday, although it'd be one hell of an expensive night out.

Yes. DJs love playing in Argentina. Overall, as I've noticed on social media, American and European DJs really like to play in South America, but Argentina is in most cases their favorite country. Argentian crowd is very loud and fun. They bring a lot of what they do on football games to music festivals and dance clubs :)

PS: When you travel to Argentina, don't forget to watch a football game too. Try a Boca, River or Racing game. Best atmosphere in the world.
