RIP Soundcloud?

Soundcloud has lost over $70 million dollars over the last two years, and could be closing soon, citing extremely poor returns per user. It seems their business model was doomed from the start. As an avid Soundcloud user, I'm not surprised but would be very sad to see them go.

Thoughts?

Spotify (and plenty other streamers) gives great access to most music. Mixcloud gives great access to DJ mixes. Bandcamp gives great access to buy original content (albums, EPs) from artists.

What does Soundcloud offer that these services don't? Bunch of unfinished demos?

Unreleased remixes?

And a download button, sort of.

Download links.

I only really use it for listening to DJ mixes, but the UI is far better than Mixcloud. As a user I have no complaints at all with it. It's an excellent platform for hosting mixes.

There seems to be a new "Is this the end of Soundcloud?" article every six months. People have been predicting its demise for over three years. I personally hope it can keep going, and these articles don't suggest imminent closure. Spotify was pissing out lost money for year after year (and may still be losing money) without closing. Big digital platforms seem to be able to lose money for quite a while in their growth phase. As long as the user-base is suitably massive, investors continue to believe they can be monetised. These new major label deals will be given a chance to play out before anything drastic happens.

Even if it does go down, something else will take its place.

I thought of that as well, but the downside could be not all will be uploaded again.

Wouldn't the one or other would taking it over be an option?

I like it better than Mixcloud also because playlists are visible at once.

Of course not - what I meant was there'll always be an alternative.

I've been using these kinds of sites since MP3.com was a thing, I tend not to get too emotionally attached.

What I meant was that the alternative whatever it is, possibly won't contain what already has been uploaded to Soundcloud now, if the uploader decides not to upload all their tracks and sets again.
It won't be a disaster or anything, but some tracks and sets could disappear.

Soundcloud is also a pretty good place to discover new music.

This is kind of worrying, I have free digital label and were exclusive to SoundCloud. Might have to rearrange things.
