I would like it more if DOOM had verses throughout the entire track, then it would make a lot more sense. But DOOM is god, and if they have taste enough to include him on this album, I'm remaining optimistic. :o

Uh, gonna have to disagree with my husband. I dig this a lot.
I really just don't think their music is meant to be listened to as isolated singles (although this one stands on it's own pretty well, imo). Even more interested in hearing the album as a whole now.

I agree that Subways is better. There's another new track on Spotify as well called Colours, which is in a similar vein. Quite nice, and closer to their old joyous-nostalgic thang, but arguably neither track would have made it onto Since I Left You. Still, I could probably take a 7/10 level LP of this kind of stuff, provided I can skip that ing Frankie Sinatra track.

Yeah it's pretty in awful, lol. You doubt me, but it seems more and more like they released that very purposefully. Release a piece of first so all the other stuff sounds really great in comparison, lol.

Welp, I just finished listening and I really really like it. It is definitely a distinctly different journey than the one they took us on in SILY. Not better, not worse, not equals. But certainly companions at the same table in the lunch room. It met my expectations but didn't surpass them, and I'm totally okay with that. This is an enjoyable listen all on it's own.
I read their description of this album as a road trip, meant to evoke feelings of growing up, and I would say they were successful with that. That feeling of nostalgia is strong throughout. Makes me think of long, end of summer days...the way you feel when you know you have to go back to school in a month and you have to say goodbye to your summer crush.
Hip hop is my first love, so for someone like me I think the guest artists are well received. I think the tracks with rapping are an important piece of what contributes to this album having it's own flavour, and I like the intentional hip hop vibe. Collab with Toro Y Moi is a good one. Camp Lo was a nice surprise. It's also a lot more purposefully psychedelic sounding. Some real Pet Sounds type .
I think it's a thoughtfully programmed album. The tracks flow smoothly and sweetly together; just as I figured the sum is better than the parts, and it makes a lot of sense from start to finish. Even that piece of Frankie Sinatra is better crammed in right at the beginning where you can forget about it, lol.
I give it a bold 8/10. :o
Will have to listen a few more times to see if it sticks/I'm just being a lame fangirl. Not sure if it has that quality that will make it stand the test of time, but I feel like that's just because of how their sound fits amongst everything else that's available nowadays. It's also a very summery sounding album, so dunno how that's gonna affect it's impact over time.

I've heard the full thing now, and it's very much "okay". A nice pleasant background listen, a bit nostalgic, a bit psychedelic, very breezy and sunshine-y and sepia-tinted, but not a single hook on the whole damn thing that remained stuck in my head after it finished (except for that execrable tune). I'm sure there's a lot of detail that will come out with close listening, but nothing close to the sustained pop orgasm that was SILY.
Still, at least they've got the monkey off their back now.
