lol, look who's ing talking you thick . there's nothing special about the AR15. it's a semi auto rifle, of which there are many. it's popular with nutcases because it's a ing cool-looking firearm, modelled as it is on the M4.

how about you do some research and stop posting nonsense? first google shopping effort. ~640 models to choose from.

Wait, seriously!? THAT's why it's popular!? I'm no gun expert, but even I know drug pushers here are all about the AR-15 and the AK-47.

There has got to be a better reason. Are you sure they don't distribute coupons or something? Free toys inside the barrels like Kinder Eggs?

The AK-47 is popular, because it's incredibly simple, reliable and sturdy. You can dump it full of sand or snow and it will still probably work. The Finnish army rifle is actually based on it.

Interesting, I had no idea. This explains quite a lot...

well, that's just my guess as there are no notable features that separate it from any other semi auto, 30-round magazine rifle. AK47's have fully automatic fire, which distinguishes it from a (non modified) AR15.

the AR15 looks like the US military's M16 line of assault rifles. the M16 has been in service for 50 years and would have featured in pretty much every US war film set after WW2. in the internet age you'd see it constantly in pics from warzones. it and the AK47 are the 2 celebrities of assault rifles.

AR15

M4 carbine

Of course it being the single most common weapon in the universe might also have something to do with the popularity.

A lot of illegally acquired assault rifles come from black markets left behind after wars. The AK-47 has been shopped out by the Russians ever since it entered service in 1949, so there's a huge number of them in circulation around the globe that can be smuggled and sold on the black market.

There are a lot of reasons why this particular firearm is very popular. Indeed, the fact that it looks like the M16 and M4 (the guns everyone grew up watching the "good guys" use in every US war film set from the 60s onward) is certainly one reason people like it. Additional to that, and likely most importantly, it's cheap. The patent on the design is expired so there are a lot of manufacturers making versions of this rifle, which means lots of competition and lower prices. The fact that it uses .223 caliber rounds adds to it's popularity as well. .223 is a very accurate, powerful round, which is mass produced in staggering quantities and available for incredibly low prices ($0.30 - $0.50 per round). It should also be noted that it's a very reliable, low maintenance gun.

The idea of banning a single gun is just plain silly. In Canada we did just that with the Mini 14 (very similar to the AR 15) after a Ruger Mini 14 Ranch Rifle was used in a massacre in 1989. It's hard to say for sure if that made any difference because it was done in conjunction with a number of other gun control measures; however, we can say with certainty that there was no increase in mass shootings when the prohibition of this gun was later lifted.

heat is one of my favourite action films so if i was the kinda guy to want to go out unhinged, val kilmer is practically working in advertising. 3:49.

That is an awesome scene. I can only imagine how much cooler it would be if I was holding an AR15 while watching it.
