Im talking about in every genre an artist might come around and have a song that makes an impact in the scene and ill use alphazone as an example with "the legacy" why not continue producing ? Cash in on that edm wave , why not you deserve it . It just seems really odd to work years and years to learn a skill and than just fade into obscurity after 2 or 3 releases. Anyone understand what i mean ?

Producing for others and making music for ads etc. can be a good business.

A lot of producers will also apply their technical sound expertise to other things, such as sound mixing for television/movies/etc.

Well, in your example the track was actually by Saltwater, remixed by Alphazone. Alphazone were very much a hard house/trance act, and that scene pretty much died after 2004. The main member of Saltwater became more famous as Funabashi, and looking at Discogs it appears he is still riding that wave.

Some producers probably just decided they have got all they want from the scene and leave on a high, some have their enthusiasm crushed out of them (see Cosmithex recently). Others wake up in the morning and realise 'oh god, I make trance music, what am I doing with my life'.

What happened to Cosmithex? I see his social media accounts have all disappeared.

He publicly gave up because he was pissed off that the labels were taking such a big cut of his sales he wasn't earning any money. It's a shame he didn't give Bandcamp a go.

Oh, . I'm surprised/disappointed we didn't have a thread about that. Wasn't he mostly on, uh... J00F?

He definitely should have tried Bandcamp, that's really too bad he's just given up.

That seems like a really weird reason to give up considering that digital sales for underground dance music and especially obscure trance are so that any difference is going to be negliable. That said, I think it's even weirder that there are still labels taking huge cuts.. why? You're not earning any real money, you're just insulting your artists.

If you have a loyal fanbase, you can make Ok money on bandcamp, certainly more than on Beatport and all the other sites that take a huge cut and more importantly only appeal to a specific group of DJs.

To be honest, I think Cosmithex just wasn't realistic about the industry. He did a few promo mixes at the start of his career and was offered a DJ gig at a J00F Editions event, but apparently he just decided he didn't want to do it, for whatever reason. With that went any realistic chance of making decent money, given his chosen style.

I expect that it was just general frustration that all his hard work wasn't giving him any tangible reward. The labels taking 50% was probably just salt in the wound.

Right thanks for the correction but all the same , and im not familiar with cosmithex but im assuming this applies to him , like you know what your getting yourself into why abandonship after you get a little taste of success? if i was them i would just flood the market and keep up with todays trends , it doesn't need to be hard house or whatever make deep house if thats what people want because you already have the skill down just change the tempo, but i can understand if their hearts just not in that...furthermore maybe they do get more capital out of doing scores and video games
