The new Macbook.......'Pro'

This is a post I made on my FB page
I've allowed myself to ponder it for a couple of days, but my mind is now made up. The new Macbook Pro is a pile of steaming . What we've lost :-
1) Magsafe charger
2) ALL standard USB ports
3) SD card reader
4) Conventional F buttons
5) A meaningful performance upgrade
6) HDMI out
What we've gained :-
1) A gimmicky touch/scroll bar
2) A substantial price hike in the UK
I think it's fair to say that Apple are evicting themselves from the 'Pro' market by proxy. They're now more than happy to sell phones and iPads (and £25 adapter cables for last years tech to work with this years tech). What say you?
I also realised that if you want to power the Macbook and plug it into an external screen (which I do all the time) you're down to two USB-C connectors. |

Ive a 2008 model, just a great laptop
id love to change it though for some slgihtly new features like Casting, was hoping that Apple would sell the previous model at a discount but i dont see them on the website anymore! :(
that touchbar on the new one seems like a total gimmick at first glance |

Yeah I have a 2014 top spec one, and I'll just keep it until it dies now.
That touchbar is just that, a gimmick. In the official Apple promo vid they showed it being used to pick Emoji's.
Mind you, Microsoft are kicking ass with their new hardware so maybe they'll make a 'pro' level laptop as well as the surface stuff.
I really don't need the touch capability. |

I really don't get it.
It would be one thing if they did that emoji bar on the normal macbooks, but on the pro, in place of the Function keys? ing madness and the connectivity downsides are going to limit that thing even more.
Tbh, you're right Geoff - Apple have slowly been moving away from real "pro" focused stuff for a long while. It's down to business really: they make so much more money from selling 100's of millions of iphones than they do from selling a hundred thousand mac pros, which require so much more support and don't really have a subscription model like iphones do. It's becoming a simple equation of high volume and regular repeat customer, or sell few, very expensive things that require long warranties and won't be replaced for 5+ years.
I'm still on a 2008 imac and it's only now starting to show it's age.
I know some studios are still using that last (non darth vader) gen of mac pros and have no intention of upgrading in the near future.
Microsoft could steal the show here - if they were able to bridge the gap with equipment that would make up for the less stable OS, you could see a mass migration eventually for the pro market. |

My perception is that each new Apple product now is designed solely to try and evacuate you from more of your money down the line.
The new MBP comes with 'universal' USB-C right? Well no, nobody is really using it yet. Somebody mentioned that you can plug your computer into your monitor via USB-C and it'll charge at the same time. Ah, but my monitor doesn't support that feature so I'll need a new monitor. Apple know that a certain percentage of these extra upgrades will be purchased directly from them.
Oh, and I have also read that a soon to be arriving OSX update will effectively brick the last gen Mac Pro.

Yeah that bar is , but looks good. And as a developer... No escape button :wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf:.
Would have been way better if they put e-ink in the keys itself so those can have specific functions (and thus icons) based on the application you are using. |

Still using an audiofire4
Thing is a workhorse but ever since I went to mavericks the driver is a bit unstable.
Sadly, Echo Audio suddenly decided to stop making interfaces and have now posted a big message on their webpage basically saying, you're ed if you're on OSX Capitan.
Such a shame - they were a really good little company making interfaces that punched way above their weight. |

they still work on capitan with a quick ktext line command fix. Worked for the lightpipe.
