RA producing short films now it seems...

space shutting down after 27 years, 15 of those with the big man at the helm.

fantastic insightful and introspective short doc. pretty thought-provoking, actually.

recommended watch.

looks like a commercial company, ushuaïa, is swooping in and leasing the land. i presume they wont be able to call it space anymore though, who knows. carl has given a few coded digs, i don't think he is pleased. he looks keen to get the out of there.

what the is this "VIP" club culture? i have heard that a few times now.

carl is the man, some great early footage of him in this.

gotta respect him. he has not wavered over his ?30 years of djing. most big names dj's have their detractors, but i don't think i've ever heard anyone talk out of turn about cox, guy's a legend. shame what is happening to his spot.

looks like he will be a lot less prevalent on the circuit now. retirement has probably been on his mind. he's earned a good rest, anyway.

Damn this place was 2 years old when i was born , i should of went to ibiza when i had the chance a few years ago , space is iconic for any clubber :(

This is good mini-doc, I enjoyed it.

Puts perspective on how long that club, Pepe and ultimately the island has been around for. Was a great intro into a topic I'd love to do more learning about.

Essentially when a club makes most of it's money via a small group of "VIPs" rather than "normal" people buying tickets and buying booze. If you can attract the super-rich, it's incredibly profitable, we are talking up to hundreds of bucks per bottle and thousands just in table fees. I've seen pictures on instagram where a bunch of these kids racked up 50 grand just in one night. It's insane. Of course if they spend that much, they essentially own the club for the night and thats where the problem comes in, it's no longer about providing a good experience for the average clubber, it's just about satisfying these VIPs.

it seems the VIPs are the pinnacle of the commercialisation problem.

you can chart it. the island is colonised by hippies. paul oakenfold "discovers" it. some great underground parties to place. it blows up. it becomes an 'experience' for young people - a lot of whom aren't even into the music back home. hangers-on VIP types get there and drive the final nail into the coffin.

a night out becomes about bottles of cristale, selfies, and sitting in a reserved booth. wtf. the whole cycle is basically human nature at work :nervous:

the company taking over space's HQ are responsible for putting on david guetta and hardwell nights. no wonder carl wants to get the out of there.

on a positive note, i like how they describe ibiza as scientifically proven (or whatever) as being in the exact right spot on earth for having a good time :happy2:

hopefully the plebs will off after a few years and find some new place - I wouldn't go back there the way it is at the moment (judging by reports)

What's the word on Vegas being the 'new Ibiza,' in that it's most similar to what Ibiza used to be like before the turn of the century? I have a hard time imagining that Vegas in any way embodies an 'authentic spirit' of anything, but that was apparently the rumored trend a few years back.
