Hard Drive partition naming problems...

I ran CHKDSK (ScanDisk for those who don't have Windows XP) a few days ago on my partition named "WinXP-Corp-OS" and CHKDSK "couldn't open the volume". When I renamed it to "WINXP_CORP__OS", everything went fine. Why did this happen? Is it because certain characters are not allowed when naming partitions/volumes or is it because my name was too long? Can someone tell me what the limit of the number of characters for volume labels is and exactly what characters are NOT allowed? THANKS!
