Hey, a thread about trance! :D

Anyone here listen to it? Ever been to a psytrance party?

I don't and never have, but I'm thinking about visiting Goa in December.

Worth checking out the scene there?

I had a couple of years of going to psy-trance events around 2012. The first time you hear psy over a good soundsystem it blows your mind, but it doesn't take long for the novelty to wear off. The parties themselves are frequently brilliant - in fantastic locations and often with great decor, costumes and old-fashioned rave spirit. If the "rave" scene lives on, it's surely in psy-trance. But the majority of the music is extremely gimmicky and irritating. The quality of DJing is abysmally low. And the crowds are completely undiscerning. They'll dance to any old and react just the same.

A couple tracks I picked up recently:

Union Jack - Cactus (OOOD Remix)

X-Dream - Clone III (Blue Planet Corporation Remix)

^Track is featured on a X-Dream remixes album you could check out for more tracks/artists.

So you're basically entering into two seperate topics. There is the question about Psychedelic Trance in the global context and then there's Psychedelic Trance in Goa. The reason why the distinction is so important is because Goa is to Psy Trance as Berlin is to Techno. Basically, it's the trend setter and more often times than not, whenever the rest of the world catches up, something new is starting.

As you're planning a trip to Goa, I'll try to explain what to look for/expect while going there. The main parties (West End, Monkey Valley for example) are very much influenced by one record label; Parvati Records. This is the main sound that has been pushed for the past 3-5 years on all the big dance floors. If you find it too psychedelic, too fast, too high pitched etc, I doubt you're going to have a lot of fun at night time parties.

Full-on and Twilight is also huge in Goa. One artist in particular who I personally find to be the most interesting psy trance artist is Ajja. He has basically inspired most of the twilight acts and has pushed full on artists into more edgy, darker music. He is simply a musical genius that is highly praised in the scene and very deservedly so. Most of this music is early morning into noon hour for Goa where in other parts of the world it would be peak hour.

A lot of the stuff which might be mentioned in this thread that is progressive related (Iono, Iboga etc) is very unpopular in Goa. There isn't a specific reason I can give you but I'm sure if you meet knowledgeable people there, they can offer you some insight.

Hope this helps.

Been some quality Goa released this year.

GoaD - Galactic Aviator on NeoGoa is one hell of an album. Psychedelic Goa the way it used to be made in the golden days.

Man With No Name's remix of X Dream - Second Room was by far & away the best of the entire album.

Astral Projection have just released a new remix EP on Suntrip which is brill.

Ovnimoon - Invocation on Suntrip is one of the best Goa Tracks possibly ever imo.

Astral Projection's remix of their own SFX track Y-Salem is beautiful dream trance.

This is pretty much spot on.

Agreed. I tend to lean more towards the PsyChill/Dub/Prog styles myself if I'm in a Psy mood. It holds my interest longer than pure full-on psy - after awhile full-on becomes very repetitive and it can get a little irritating. Unless it's brought in doses after a good build-up of prog psy and psy chill.

It's more that psy parties are great in basically all respects apart from the music. I'm not sure but could be because psy isn't "cool" and therefore doesn't attract undesirables.

That was my second favorite off that album, quite the rush. Really enjoyed Blue Planet Corporation's mid tempo style. Hope he has plans to do more stuff, haven't seen his name in a while.
