Ok, so i've been spinning for almost 3 years now and been trying to get myself gigs at various places with moderate sucess, I've gotten to play at a couple bars and a small club. Problem is getting a break and getting gigs with promoters, even the small guys. Generally promoters don't like to go with people they've never heard of (and that's perfectly fine) and the smaller guys always get DJ's they know (friend of a friend or whatever). I've spoken with a few well known local guys like Dr Trance and Deko-ze and they've both said, the best way to get your name out is to throw your own events. So that's what i'd like to do.

I'm sure there are tons of other dj's here that are in the exact same position, so i'd like feedback on what we can do about this. A full blown rave is a little much, but a club night somewhere that is open till 3am would be good. Lets get something going, there's enough of us that any cost would be easily split up. I personally don't mind loosing some cash if it means I can build more recognition.

I'm also fedup with all the house/jungle nights all over the place, Trance has been lacking as of late and I want to change that :)

ya me and trancearmada we were thinking about it long time ago...
but it is so hard to through an event without hook ups
and knowing 'right' people

man i guess that's what it's all about these days .. not just in the club/party industry .. but to find any kinda job !!

i've noticed that there are so many aspiring independent DJ's in T.O. so what happens to most of them? i figure some just spin as a hobby but for the ones who are trying to make it big and make it their career.. ??

does anyone know what kinda statistics this sort of thing holds ? i'm just curious .. i mean if i had the cash i'd definately try promoting.. but like many of you guys have said you have to know the right people. but that sounds easier said that done .. !

Well, i'm not pursuing DJing as a job, more like a hobby that I take to the next level. Idealy i'd like to play out a couple times a month or at a party every so often. Funny you mentioned production, I just started getting into production recently as another means of getting my name out and to be able to drop a tune that I made. I agree you need to know people, but I don't think that's the end all and be all of getting your event off the ground. I think a good place to start would be in a club, they already have their own security and stuff in place and have people coming to the club on a regular basis. Problem is you have to convince them to let you run a night there, they take the risk of loosing business if your event sucks.

i think that producing is probably a better way to get ur feet off the ground as opposed to DJ'ing. true there are a lot of independent tracks floating about out there, even on the net .. but often a lot of big name DJ's will go out hunting for creative material and maybe even take a chance at dropping the tune at one of their residencies. And if that tune is yours then wow that's some immediate attention. on the other hand with DJ'ing just like mecha said you'd have to know the right people and often that can be hard if you've never really been to any parties or have known anyone in the industry before ..

i personally don't have the money to try and throw an event, so ive resorted to just good ol' promoting myself out of the ass

it works, but it just takes time

sooner or later you'll get a break (at least i hope...im still waiting for mine :p )

I would be very interested in doing the same, like Mecha mentioned earlier. We should get together and talk things out. Gimme a call on my cell on Sat any time and maybe we can meet up on that day too.

I think we should just all meet downtown on Sat somewhere at a coffe shop or something along those lines.

oh and BTW my cell # is 905-815-3044 my name is Art
