Friday 130: Vacation Edition (pg. 2)

Woke up early to drive my wife to a talk she gave in a private institution about her experience in Japan. It's funny how couples tend to talk increasingly like one another other the years - she said a thing or two that I typically say to get a cheap laugh from the audience, and there she was, doing the same. It's cuter when she does it, though :p

That was the highlight of my otherwise pretty boring day.

I actually just got back from vacation - it was a little hard to properly enjoy because the day after I got back was my big Autumn half marathon race that I had been training for. The beach was wonderful, but I wish I didn't have the race hanging over my head.

I didn't do very well, I had the same problem that I had with the Spring half marathon - feeling good for about 8/9 miles before falling apart and being forced to walk/run the rest of the way. Definitely need to improve my stamina the next time, but I think I'm going to take a break from long races since little man is coming in February.

My brother and dad also did the race and they both did really well. Makes me feel like an idiot to train so hard and struggle. But also I can't keep comparing myself to them. Growing up I was forced to be competitive as a swimmer and now I continue to find it hard to separate my mindset from that, as I mentioned in the other thread. A good break will do nicely for me, I'll probably do some other stuff I want to do like more swimming, basketball, and weightlifting.

I really disliked skiing for the longest time for similar reasons. My parents were both instructors and race coaches. My dad was an Olympic swimmer, so had very high performance expectations when it came to sports + athletics.

My dad and sister were always on the same page about the technical aspects of athleticism, whereas I just wanted to around and have fun. Weekend "coaching" days just killed it for me, and I didn't ski for 20+ years after my dad died.

Finally found my joy for it again last year, but it took years for me to get back there. So glad for it, I look forward to winter now!

As a loyal 'Murican, let me tell you something: we, as a nation, have put and continue to put so much carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere that you'd best quash those winter dreams right now.

End of my week vacation. Was pretty nice as hurricane Ophelia, which hit Ireland, brought us some unusual warm air for the time of the year. Must have been nice too for the many ADE visitors.

We had to visit the dentist today as my son had broken off half a tooth while playing with a friend yesterday. Unfortunately it was one of his adult teeth, but the dentist was able to glue the two pieces back after some puzzling. Now hope the superglue holds...

Ready to watch F1 in Austin.

If it doesn't hold, just introduce him to the movie Fight Club when he's old enough. It's my understanding that Brad Pitt had one of his front teeth chipped (and later repaired) for the role. Gotta do what choo gotta do, mang. :o

I lied, JP, no worries. A group of old, which, rich, and scared Republicans has just assured me that "Global Warming" is a myth/scam perpetuated by the Social Left as a means of population control and religious suppression. Ski away! :gsmile:

My dad has been working for WT for 30 years. He's the quality director!

I've got a glass of 101 neat right now to finish out the weekend.

Well, I'll be damned! Small world, sir...small world. I used to be a Scotch only kinda guy, but my brother turned me on to Buffalo Trace, which totally opened the door to bourbon for me.
