Friday 147

Keeping the tradition alive, wh00r3z, it's Friday 147. This will be our calm before the storm weekend. Next week involves 4 appointments to get everything ready for the chemo, which will start the following week. I'd love to spend an evening at the cabin, just to take in a little nature and to get my head on straight before all this begins. Might take in a movie or 2 this weekend...not sure when we'll have time again or if/when the wife will feel up to it again. Hoping for a normal/moderate day at work to end the week. What say you?

Might hit the gym tonight. Have been skiing the past two nights though and am feeling pretty beat so will depend if I get a second wind.

Getting our daughter's Nexus card tomorrow. Family vacay ready!

Since we've had actual, /winter weather consistently for the first time in many seasons this year, my cardio has suffered greatly. I did get in a mile jog and a mile walk yesterday, however, since we had a rare day of acceptable weather. I did better than I thought I would after so much down time. Back to the weights tonight, as we are scheduled for another deluge and colder air.

It was a week with ups and downs.
Carnival was fun especially for the kids, but we knew we had a funeral to attend at Thursday, so because of that we didn't feel like going on Tuesday.
There's still something of a cold and/or flu going around, which results in not feeling to well and lack of energy. It just doesn't go away.

The Winter Olympics however brought a lot of distraction. Our speed skating women won a gold medal each of four distances till now. Our men at two of three. And the one we didn't win brought Canada gold by a Dutchman who emigrated four months ago. Finally another anthem.
Fun fact was that we got more medals in one hour than Belgium got in the last 94 years together (due to an addition silver at short track) :) And one of those also was by a Dutchman who emigrated to Belgium for the skating.
Currently still at rank 3 overall is nice for tiny us. We won't hold that, but for a country which actually doesn't have any snow or ice for longer then a couple of days each year and currently sucks on football....

I kinda feel this has been a weird Winter Olympics; it's probably because of the god awful coverage here in the USA, combined with even worse commentary, save for maybe Bode Miller who actually knows what he's talking about.

Our best hope at a Speed skating medal got completely ing screwed (in the lead, final lap, her hand gets bumped and they judges completely miss it).

Watched USA's Schiffin get gold in an event she usually sucks in, then stack it on her favorite discipline and get beaten by someone she's beaten 30 times in the last 4 years.

Shawn white ing killed it though. Last run and you pull out the best thing you've ever done. Talk about rise to the occasion.

Snow looks ing horrible though; the trees are all brown and the snowpack is so cold people are having to take stupid risks just to have a chance. Super G is going to be ing dangerous tonight.

Then last night watched that Japanese guy do what was probably the most flawless Short Ice Skating program in history yesterday.

There doesn't seem to be a central village theme this time; it just seems like different events taking place in completely different places and very disjointed.

Dunno, just seems like a weird games.

I really shouldn't complain about life, given what you're going through at the moment Zoso, but I'm in a ing foul mood today.

Hey, no worries, man...everything is relative. Yes, I am bitching and moaning about my wife being sick, but she'd have no problem with me pointing out that 2 billion people woke up today, stepped out of their mud/grass/tin hut/shack, looked around, and wondered, "how/what will I feed my family today?" ;)

Your wife sounds like a beautiful person, Zoso, nice to hear she's got such a great boss attitude :)

As an unbiased outsider who comes from a country with no medal contenders, I've been enjoying it so far... But I do have to agree with you - the commentary can make or break an event when you're watching at home.

I've come to dread every single word uttered by the figure skating announcers here in Brazil. The guy sounds like an unenthusiastic jaded dad going to a mediocre child's practice for the eleventh time in a week. The snowboarders are awesome though, they make you support everyone. When Hirano and James snatched White's gold medal for a few minutes, they were so overwhelmed with joy it was hard to feel sleepy even though it was way past 3 AM and I should've gone to bed at least a couple of hours earlier :p

Think that was our Yara wasn't it?
I thought the same until I noticed she went through the corner on one skate after giving a bump to the Canadian girl. Also it looks like she lost speed as Yara just slides through the corner much faster. Difficult to see.

Well, the Netherlands dominate speed skating even more than dutch DJs were over-represented in trance music charts, so it was the whole orange tsunami against the few foreigners who stood a chance :p

To this day, my only explanation for his defeat in Sochi is that Isaac Newton wanted to get back at him for breaking the law of gravity :p

Good article, as it also explains why we're good at it (dedication, professional teams).
However it's not all due to being in a professional team as Esmee Visser (22 years old, Gold medal 3km women) last year wasn't even good enough for a professional team and trained with some amateurs. Got her gear by crowdfunding and now out of the blue won gold.
Everybody expected Sablikova to win.

Shorttrack today was fun, no medals for us, but Korea is just unbeatable at the women, their men ed up and made Canada extremely happy. That's shorttrack, always surprising.

Women Super G was the biggest surprise. Japanese men own figure skating again.
