| Most people would call Intelligant Dance Music as something that is progressive and builds from nothing, or a track that adopts the "Less Is More" approach. |

ackk.....Infinity noooo.....bite your tounge or bang your head on your monitor for that remark :P
Intelligent music is what all great DJ and producers strive for (well most of the good ones anyway). This kind of music is not "poppy" with hooks and vocals, you know the songs that you get bored of after a week or two....those songs are superficial, and were probably written or made in a day with not much though behind them.....probably based on a feeling or short burst of inspiration.....(or *heaven forbid* a copy of another song) ......
Intelligent Electronic music is really for Genres with a deeper meaning, IE: for intelligent people that can find something "more" to the music. This kind of music is timeless and will never get tiring....it may not be the best at first listen, but after you hear it awhile you appreciate it more and more, appreciate the thought and the time the artist has put into it :) This kind of music will never age just like good classical music like Beethoven and the great classical materpieces :)
Also, I would say this is why great albums such as System F- Out of the Blue take a year and a half to make and albums like Darude (sorry darude fans) takes a couple months :P |

infinity,
i think you are confusing "intelligent dance music" (which i personally have never heard of before this thread) and "intelligent drum and bass" (artists like aphex twin).
ckerr,
i agree with you that "intelligent" music has a more timeless quality, but just because a song has vocals (i'm not sure what a "hook" is) it doesn't automatically make it cheesy. there are quite a few songs with vocals that i really like and don't get sick of. i know what kind of songs you're talking about though... |

| "Intelligent" is just a snobby name for experimental music, which I suppose you can imagine what it sounds like ... I can't really think of any artists right now but I'll let you know if I do. |

yup that's about right. 'intelligent' can also be classified with trackz that have fluctuate up and down or build and drop without really noticing it...at least not much. there's a lot of inteligent techno out there.

| well....I have heard many DJ talk about Intelligent dance music, Oakenfold talks about it, and has tried to go that way also with his new progressive style.....and also mauro Picotto also says he plays intelligent dance music......It's pointless to name names of songs that are intelligent dance, cause if you don't get it, then you just don't, it's like modern art......So debating, would be like the timeless debate of what is art....and I hardly want to get into that :) |

*good discussion*
To me intelligent music does involve more work to appreciate. That to me translates into progressive (sometimes). I also find intelligent music is the opposite of cheesy.
I totally agree with the idea that it's in the eye of the beholder too, like the art analogy. For sure.
And I also think that using artists as examples can't really get ya anywhere. Of course Oakie and Armin are going to say their making intelligent music? Hmm no we make stupid music. lol
