just check the strobe indicator, and see if the table is spinin right yo.
hey cheggy
I don't think it is possible to tell how old an mkII is. Obviously, if its an mk3, its easy, but mine has no marking of when it was made.

Obviously, check to make sure the pitches work right, but have a look at the tone arm and check to make sure it isn't loose. Make sure both the 33 and 45 buttons work, that the platter is flat and isn't warped at all, and put on a record and aply a little pressure down on it. See how powerful the motor is. Make sure that it hasn't warn out. It should slow down very breifly when you apply the pressure but after that, while you're still pushing down, the speed should remain relatively constant. Just check the strobe lights. Also, plug it into an amp and make sure that the cables are all working, especially the rca's. Check that you are getting stereo sound.

make sure that you have no dents in the tonearm either...can't say how many times I've seen tonearms with dents in them and makes the quality suck ass!! But everything else listed above is standerd procedure :)

I shudder to think of the abuse that would be needed to actually dent or kink the tonearm... ugh
