I saw the movie last night and this is the only way I can explain it
Frank saved Donnie so he can live and see what would have happened, he then sees that the future is full of pain and death and he decides that it's better if he had died in the first place so these bad things wouldn't have happened, this would help him to die peacefully and happily
some questions remain unanswered though like whats the deal with frank and also is Donnie seeing the future in his dream (which explains a lot) or is everything real and frank has gone back in time to guide donnie (if this is the case then other questions arise like how the did he manage to go back in time and let himself die) |

| the plane thing can be explaind, his mother and sister can be in the house and the plane at the same time because when the engine hits the house, that is in the past, but the mother and sister are on that plane 28 days later, they are two separate points in time but have something in common, the engine that goes back in time through the hole |

What I still don't get about the movie though, is the small matter that the jet engine coming from the future is what triggers the universe to collapse and the world to end (in 28 days time). So how does Donnie dying at the end stop this from happening? The engine has still coem from the future and therefore the world is still going to end? right?

actually, the jet engine DOESN'T trigger the alternate universe. it was triggered moments before and the engine is only the "artifact" that only signifies that it was triggered and which must be returned back to the original universe in order to remove the unstable alternate universe and stop the real world from destroying itself.
i find it rather hard to think about the logic behind this movie, but that's probably because it's a movie and not some things make perfect sense. |

hmm, maybe when frank said that the world would end he didn't actualy mean THE world, but donnie's world instead. Maybe he's just telling him that in 28 days he's gonna die :/ |

| theres no right answer to what exactly happens in the movie, just opinions. the directors opinions could be different than yours, but how does that make his interpretation right. his intent was to make a movie like this where there are just so many differemt things that could happen, maybe this maybe that. its meant to provoke a conversation like this. ive seen the movie 5 times and every time i watch it i try to find something new and in the end i have a whole different answer to the previous time i watched it. |

thats wat i think...he changed the future where most of the movie takes place...but after he dies and changes...every1 seems to still know him and each other...they're memories from the other future are still with them.... |
