This has now become my birthday thread.

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone. Got an NVIDIA Shield and have been playing with it all morning. Nice to get rid of my old bulky HTPC.

Happy Birthday!

I also have been thinking about getting an NVIDIA Shield. It's one of the best media players, but I'm more curious in it's gaming capabilities. My kids are still too young to play one single game for a long time (and I don't want them to), so it's more important they can try many (cheaper) games than the awesome looks of e.g. PlayStation ones.
I use a small NUC with a 3TB external HD as HTPC.
I read next year there will be a cheaper XBOX version without disc drive for $199, so that might be interesting too.

Started the keto diet today , suffering from seasonal depression right now

Seems tough to cut away all the comfort foods at a time and in a state when you'll need them the most. :tongue2

Anyway, I hope you'll stick with it. I started it about three months ago and I'm around six pounds away from my goal weight. Progress is a huge motivator in tough times, and it helps just to take a quick look in the mirror whenever you feel like caving to your cravings.

I know that the debate around this diet is considerable, and there are educated, qualified proponents and detractors of it; but whatever the relationship my weight loss has to keto, here I am, and I'm going to ride it the last few steps of the way.

One score minus five years ago, I first enrolled, in my university, as a freshman, and worked hard in the hope I would get a job someday.

Now, the semester has just finished, my man bun has stood tall, and I have just become a tenured professor. Time to let my hair down and figure out what comes next. I've focused on this for so long and I don't think I've planned for the following day :D

Haven't checked in for some time. Just having a run of "bad mental health days," as I call them. Once that kind of depression and self-assault kicks in, I usually withdraw as a defense mechanism to (try) to protect those around me from all the ancillary bull that goes with it. The wife's latest checkups still show no signs of cancer, but we are pretty confident the chemo/radiation combo has exacerbated her problems with her mitral and tricusipd valves.

Hard to believe it's December already. The first half of the year dragged, but I think that was the result of the constant worry over the wife's treatments, etc. I'll be 42 this month. That's about 20 more than I ever expected, and as hard as I've been on my body over the years in a never-ending attempt to self-medicate my "depression," I truly feel like I am just on borrowed time.

But, the sun is finally going to shine today for the first time in many, and that always helps more than I think. A couple of big year-end projects for work are looming (disaster recovery testing for a couple of critical products/services), so it's the usual mad dash to the finish.

Hope everyone is well. Stu, I had a Foster's Oil Can on Friday night, and I thought of you.

Thanks, Pie. Sometimes it's good to be missed, even if only virtually.

Theoretically speaking, I'm given some leeway so I can focus more on quality than on quantity of research, and won't be sacked if I reduce my output to zero for a while (although this would lead to all kinds of problems).

Practically speaking, I should be fine as long as I don't do anything illegal or immoral. This has gone swimmingly well thus far :p
