Is (Prog) Breaks making a comeback?

Paradox Lost
Was just clicking through Sasha's latest Beatport chart, and stopped at a couple of places along the way that play into an inkling I've had over the past several months: breaks are back in the crates, with that modern fullness and heft that sets it closer to house than it was to trance back in the early oughts.

I'm either completely off about this or completely late to the party, but from his chart:

Yep, I've noticed this too. Another recent example is Locked Groove - The Come Up. It has a real Michael Burns kinda vibe to it.

Yeah, you're seeing people throwing the odd retro flavoured breaks tune in their sets these days. I bought this one last month, for example:

However, these kind of tunes just seem like people copying Bicep's album, or "lo-fi house" producers doing ersatz replicas of what they think the early '90s sounded like, rather than any kind of concerted revival.

From where I'm standing the breaks scene seems even deader than ever. The one regular breaks night I was still aware of seems to have stopped now. Can't remember the last time I so much as saw a breaks line-up in a second room. Show me one hot new producer or DJ who predominantly makes breaks and I might believe the tide is turning.

I think these recent examples are less about 'the tide turning' back towards breaks and more emblematic of the genre-fusion that we've seen over the last couple of years. DJs and producers seem to be widening their sounds which is really refreshing.

A good example of this is Brame & Hahmo, who have been putting out some obvious proggy throwback sounds, but incorporating it into their sets along with house, techno, breaks. The result is really diverse and genuinely exciting to listen to, not to mention totally danceable!

Yes, I need to delve into Brame & Hamo's DJing. Annoyingly, they were headlining at a small club in my city just a few weeks before I discovered their tunes.

I've heard tons of breaks on my nights out lately. London definitely has plenty of it going around.

The Eris Drew & Octo Octo EP was a huge hit last year. My copy is so quiet I've never really played it :whip:

Not a huge fan of breaks myself (I suppose I haven't tried looking in the right places), but I really like the videos posted

Yeah I really like these guys as well, love the prog/trance vibes they've been putting out. Like how they drop prog classics in their sets as well. Very promising duo.

I’m seeing it in the Anjunadeep label and Jody Wisternoff has made no bones about trying to add more of it in his sets. I like it.

Just heard this nice one from 2000 from a recent electro set:
