Considering I own no fewer than 14 of the tunes in the tracklist, and I know for a fact the majority of those were pilfered from my mixes, it's not exactly surprising that I consider this one of your best sets. It's a shame I couldn't catch more than the last 30 minutes of it on the day, as I'd have been interested to contrast how it sounded in the venue with the recording.
Given my own raging prog-bias, I almost inevitably think your best sets are those where you stay proggy and don't build too quickly into the kind of psy-edged material that obviously goes down well at DLH. Here you did that, and you also (mostly) avoided the temptation to play big prog tunes as warm up fare just because they're at 123bpm. The only place I think you went wrong is with tracks 15 and 16, which escalate the energy and the intensity of the vibe a bit too much, too early. You get things back on the right track with Story, although I do think the actual mix into it janks the flow somewhat. But then, I'm probably to blame for that because I'd just walked into the room and had a direct influence on what you decided to play next! That minor malfunction aside, the flow is really satisfying and there are obviously some serious weapons in that last half hour.
As a note, I've heard you play the Volen Sentir tune in a few sets now and I'm not always sure it works well with your style of prog, but this was probably the best use of it I've heard from you. The mix in was wildly out of key, but it nonetheless flowed pretty damn well. You also always play it in close proximity to Tell Me, which for me is a peak time thumper. Again, it seems to defy the odds and work quite well here, taking the energy up a gear after a brief respite. Again, it would have been interesting to have heard that combination of tunes in the club and seen the reaction of the crowd. |

Thanks very much for coming along and then listening back. I do think it's a shame you weren't there earlier as it was cool seeing the club start to fill up towards the middle section.
Its true that you did actually influence my choice to play 'Story', which does explain a less than perfect transition, though I don't find this one too problematic (and certainly not when playing live). I actually had the Yotto mix of BBE - 7 Days and One Week cued up, but I decided against it knowing you'd made your way there and have told me before that you hate that tune haha |
