Whats up with Progressive House?
View this Thread in Original format

There is so much great progressive house music and producers to be found these days that im astonished, ive found countless of great artist and tracks recently.
I was just browing Beatport Progressive House top 100 and i ended up adding a whole bunch of them to my spotify playlist, some of them sounded really really promising.

I hear a lot of tranzy sounds as well, is it just me or has the quality increased recent years?

Here is the playlist of tracks im listening to now on Spotify.

check out the melodic techno genre as well , which seems to be having a renaissance of it's own right now

There has certainly been a renaissance in the last 3-4 years (pun shamelessly intended). I've been banging the drum on it for quite a while, although I appreciate a lot of TAs still seem quite apathetic.

Dance music in general has become a lot more melodic again in the second half of the 2010s, helped no doubt by the availability of very high-dosage MDMA once more in certain parts of the world, and prog was always waiting in the wings for a resurgent appetite for melodic club music. More so than just the resurgence of names like Warren and Cattaneo (and arguably Lee Burridge) or the rise of names like Guy J, Henry Saiz and Khen, a sign of health has been the way the genre now gets playlisted by DJs of various other scenes. People as diverse as Laurent Garnier, Patrice Baumel, Hot Since 82, CamelPhat and Carl Cox are all willing to mix a bit of prog in.

I do think a crucial factor is that prog has got its groove back. After a long period of identity crisis copying the angular rhythms and white noise whooshes of tech house, things became looser and chunkier and just more distinctive and fun to dance to again. But I also think that a full set, or full evening, of undiluted prog can still be overly homogeneous and boring. It needs mixing in with something a little bit harder or drummier - a bit of techno, a bit of tech house, something with more of a kick. A lot of the guys from Israel and South America seem to forget that important detail.

Anyway, for me as a clubber and a DJ, the last few years have been musically perfect. It's so easy to find good tunes and good nights out again. I won't post any individual tunes because there's been far too many, but if you're looking for recommendations I'll kindly and unapologetically refer you to the mixes in my signature.

Agree generally with the sentiments of this thread, although I can't help but be bored by most of the more 'obvious' tracks that get hyped on Beatport, Progressive Astronaut et al. Not questioning his production abilities but Guy J, for example, does nothing for me. There's a good selection of tunes to be had but the majority feel like identikit remakes of 10,000 other prog house tracks that have been released in the last few years.

Amongst a smattering of others, some names I'll always check out are Tripswitch, James Monro, F-Act, Andre Absolut, Exoplanet, but these do tend towards the trancier spectrum.

This was by far my favourite tune from last year:

I have a few like this one in my cart...

Wish more of the recent stuff got pressed on vinyl. I'd love the chance to try to mix it. But since it's mostly digital, I don't get that opportunity.

The widespread availability of it (Spotify playlists, YT channels, etc.) has played a part in its resurgence. The growing popularity of events like Burning Man, too, probably. It's emotive and danceable. Spiritually digestible. What's there not to like, especially if you're someone who experienced the EDM craze and want something more now. The demand for it across the globe is higher than ever, I think.

I always have a great time at the prog club nights. Mature crowds, there for the music, super friendly.

I took a few friends from Berlin who are pure techno heads to Cattaneo/Warren in Athens this summer and even they enjoyed it. Go figure!

Yeah, I find this as well. Because there's no trendiness around prog - no RA coverage, no Fabric or Berghain bookings - you don't get people in the crowd who've been clubbing for five minutes and are just following the hype. Prog fans are either oldies who remember the '90s or they're people who've discovered the music for themselves and are genuinely into it.
