I appreciate her message and effort, and believe the cause is of high importance, but I find this girl's histrionics really annoying.
Edit: woops, I just learned she has autism. I've only been following this news briefly. My bad.

In general I stand behind the little climate cyborg's cause, but I find climate strikes slightly weird. There's one here tomorrow, close to our place. I'm not going to attend, and I'm actually making a 50 km drive to a summer cabin to escape.. Good that young people have it in them to do this though.

I bang the environmentalist drum as much as anyone, and while this girl says all the right things, I find the deification of her by certain news outlets and idiots on my Facebook feed highly annoying. Every time she says some , no matter how obvious or how much of a repetition of what scientists have been saying for years, it's headline news. Then you get people wittering on social media about what an inspiration she is. She's not an inspiration. She's 16 years old. It's easy for a 16 year old to go on "strike", since that amounts to not turning up to school for a day. What a hero. Try doing it when you've got a mortgage and five kids to feed, then we'll talk.
I just worry that if I find the circus around her this annoying, it's only going to have a counter-productive effect on all the environmental agnostics out there. It's the same way every piece of abnormal weather, whether it's snow or a heatwave, is "made more likely by climate change, scientists warn". Stop forcing the message, you shrill, insufferable bastards.

You guys are grumpy. Let the little bitch talk her , she didn't even hit puberty yet. Here's a snickers.

Why you gotta call her a bitch, Kenny?

A friend-of-an-acquaintance on Facebook commented the other day that because she is autistic, she is too mentally ill to participate in politics :wtf:

Yeah, the deification of her is rather strange.

But I have to disagree with you about that, my friend. With so much anxiety about the future, I find that many youths are extremely concerned about their studies in high school/etc, so that they can go to a good university. For her to care more about the environment than her schooling seems rather inspirational to me. It's not like she did not go to school for just a day, she's missed months.

I think this is a fair point, but I also wonder how anyone can still be environmentally agnostic and what we can do to change their minds.
I do worry also that it's simply too late and we need to start thinking about how we'll live in a warming world than how to stop it from warming.

Learn how to grow your own food and/or hunt, learn about plants and their uses, learn about diseases and sanitation, learn how to build/construct shelter and make tools. Just like in Maddaddam. :o

Sorry, just a habit. Didn't mean anything by it.

Unfortunately having a flat in London limits the space I have to grow my own food, but I am a quite decent hunter. (Although in British English this refers only to chasing foxes on horseback, rather than stalking deer or shooting birds.)
Nah, I don't think it will get that bad. But we will, in the West, need to understand how much violence we're willing to use to maintain our ways of life. Climate change will upset the wine regions of Europe, sadly, but it will also cause huge problems in less developed parts of the world, which will indubitably lead to more immigration issues. How much violence are we willing to use to limit that?
