I wonder what the US trajectory would've been without this event... GW Bush's presidency would've been more of a blur than a stain.

All in all, I'm sure the world would be a much better place, there's no disputing that. But, as someone not in the North Atlantic, I'd go even further and wonder if the world really changed that much due to events directly linked to 9/11. Even Bush's popularity boost may not have made much of a difference if the incumbent is usually reelected in the US. That comes to show how pointless and coward the whole thing was.
Planes are no longer BYOB-friendly, sure. Iraq, Libya, and Afghanistan would probably still have Saddam, Qaddafi, and a stronger Taliban (or maybe the first two countries would've gone downhill after the Arab Spring like everyone else but Tunisia). The world would also be a much better place without the New Atheists spouting nonsense on behalf of science and philosophy. The NSA would probably have encroached on civil liberties for other reasons (as the war on drugs). I hope this shows would-be terrorists that there are better ways to get what they want... although they're hardly the sharpest tools in the shed, so maybe that won't change either :p
Anyway, as a Celtics supporter, this has been a good week. Game 6 was outstanding and tonight, WE BLEED GREEN! MY MARCUS IS WICKED SMAAAAHTTTT!!!
(Sorry about Toronto, Del :D)

I'd say that, in hindsight, 9/11 was much less important to world history than it appeared at the time and for several years afterwards.
Incredible how so many Americans continue to treat it as the worst thing since the Holocaust, though. Yeah, it was a shock and it was a tragedy, but stop wallowing for Christ's sake.

I recall watching at work that morning. At the time, I worked for a small bank (nearly 100 years old, single branch facility, with one owner), and I had been there just under a year. Each morning, myself and a coworker had the task of working on the night deposits left overnight by stores, etc. We worked them under dual control in the board room. My coworker got a call, and turned on the TV. My first words were, "I bet you anything, this is some sort of attack/retaliation by Osama Bin Laden. Recall they tried bombing the WTC before." She wasn't convinced, as the newscast was still going with a possible "bad pilot/accident" angle...it was early.
I also clearly remember thinking: this is going to potentially radically change both domestic life/policy in the US and change the world, and not for the better.
As an American, I can tell you that I believed we over reacted all along. We became a victim of instant paranoia. Humans, as individuals, are horrible and performing risk assessments. Well, the collective/mob are even worse. We saw/suspected danger at every turn and under every rock. Retaliation against the Taliban or a specific segment? Okay, I can see that. But invading a sovereign nation under the false pretense of WMDs and "they might attack next" and "well, he wanted to kill my daddy" was a cluster of a mistake. The number of wasted lives, especially Iraqi civilians, is an atrocity.
Domestically, we've spent probably trillions on more govt bureaucracy and nothing but security theater for the illusion of the feeling of safety when flying.
Not one of America's finer moments upon the worldwide stage.

Man, this thread had it all. Early misinformation, informed speculation, hawkish militarism, Nostradamus, later misinformation, uninformed speculation, debates between swift action and measured restraint, and, of course:

It was like all of 2001-2004 summarized into a single thread. Really had everything. Well, everything but grammar. I don't know what it was about forums in the early 2000's that made everyone separate...their thoughts...through a series of ellipses'...like this...
Where every post reads like the notepad draft of a breakup text.

Unrelatedly, my state has basically been on fire for the past two weeks. On Tuesday, the wildfires, coupled with prevailing weather conditions resulted in this impenetrable orange glow hovering over the San Francisco Bay Area throughout the entire day.
So, somebody of course did what we were all thinking:
This was how how it looked around noontime, and this is without any kind of filter, appearing exactly how it looked that day. I've lived here all my life, and have never seen anything like this before.

We bombed iraq cuz he was ing up again..... we dont bomb them for no damn reason......... we are the one of the most powerful country in the world...and we have a duty to keep the world somewhat civilised........ when its by bombing iraq for making chemical weapons and for invading Kuwait...... well i think thats right.... we dont want to let someone thats as insane as some of these leaders get out of hand......these past bombs on iraq prevented many future deaths thats asured!!!.......and what really upset me is that im dont bashin arabic ethic people....but there are many arabic americans that live in this country help and conndown (type) his bevavior ...this really disgusts me people come to live here and they want to up this country i say anyone thats like that should be kicked out of the United States.......let them go back to there countries they love so much .... cuz they shouldnt be in this country.... cuz i say if you live in this country u should have some sort of respect for it im not saying u have to agree with everything but dont help people and condown these actions and people who do this stuff...but there also many arabic ameicans who arnt for these actions and im nto talking about those im just soly talking abou the ones who help or approve these crimals actions. another thing is that if this happened to any other country there would of been a more exgressive response to these actions.... so im saying who ever is behind this or any country who had envolvment with this should get royally punished .....its just time to think about our selfs for once and do whats right and not be a ....if this will cause a war then well there will have to be one ...but we cant let this slide . And for all those people who lost there lives or who had loved onces die today my heart goes out to you guys!!!! sorry again if it offends anyone .....and for arabic people dont think im bashing u guys ..... cuz im really not.... but some people just get joy from seeing 1000s people dieing and dancing on the streets and celebrating... what has this world come to......like i said sorry if this offends anyone im just very pissed on what happened.
