Theres more to this than just his basslines, its his drums. His kicks are always so punchy and an off beat sub drives his tracks.
Take the first example you posted, drag it into your DAW and use his drums from 28sec to 55 and you'll see what I mean. Add an off beat sub say from sylenth, 1 osc, saw wave 8 voices retrig on, little bit of drive, lp filter and compress hard, adding this alone will make that 30 second sample come alive. If its not warm enough add something like Rbass but keep the intensity low you won't need much at all. The mids that then come in after that is for decoration, there's so many arp patterns from the likes of spire that do that job. The delays are important for this to give you the width, sounds like he may use ohmboys you can hear something fizzing around the top end although that's probably on his hats.
His productions are quite old school in the way he mixes, very clean and always collapse well into mono, very pleasing to listen to. |
