I know I am going straight to hell, but here it is anyway in all its glory. I haven't seen one of these in years. The local liquor store has begun carrying them. My liver surrenders.
It's the ALE version, baby!

Never heard of it, but I like the image search results. Where and how can I obtain one in the Dirty South? |

Some lols here, and a history lesson. It used to be called "Fosters Special Brew" in the 1980s, possibly the early 90s as well. That wasn't so much of an issue here (no one drinks Fosters in Australia), but apparently it didn't go so well with overseas marketing, particularly in the UK. "Special Brew" in the UK, made by Carlsberg, was somewhat the go-to tipple of homeless people/vagrants/junkies/general--ups.
Somehow still didn't damage the brand as much as it should have :(
Second beer looks good though. |

Sweet Water Brewing does some great work. When I was young, I recall a lot of "Fosters...it's Australian for bee-ah" ads, and it was often an important part of the advertising for restaurant chain Outback Steakhouse. I can't tell you the last time I recall seeing an ad for either, although that may be more of a function of my TV viewing habits. When I was young, we had both VHF and UHF antennas. The VHF received 2, 4, and 5 (ABC, NBC, and CBS, respectively) and the UHF received 17 and 30 (Fox and wtf ever 30 was at the time), so the ads would have been on broadcast. I haven't had an antenna and access to broadcast since I was in my teens, and I'm nearly 44.
Much of my love for Foster's is simply nostalgia. When I moved back to my hometown from university, I lived with a couple of friends I had gone to high school with. We were just branching out from e American pilsners, and Foster's was one of the first that we tried and universally enjoyed. A local convenience store carried it in bottles, so that was our go to beer for a long time. They also carried Beck's and Beck's Dark, our first foray into a darker beer. They also, for a limited time, carried a Sam Adams Light, which was a remarkable tasting light beer, that I've only seen perhaps once since then.
Over the years, Fosters has fallen out of distribution here, with only one convenience store carrying it. It just happened to be the one located a mile from my former home. Our county has approved packaged liquor sales, and the store is only about 2 miles from the farm. They recently put in a couple of beer coolers and low and behold: some other poor bastard asked them to stock ye olde oil cans! So, for me, it's as much about nostalgia and warm memories as it is anything else. And as far as e beers go, we Yanks have plenty that are even far, far worse.
Finally, your anecdote reminds me of a beer called Old Style. I have a friend that's a technology director for a huge school district just outside of Chicago. He says Old Style is a total e local brew (also preferred by the homeless/wine-o types), which is the worst beer he's ever tasted. Unlike Goose Island, Old Style does not make it this far south, lulz. Hope you are well, Stu. |

| I've gone to the SweetWater brewery several times, as I used to work for Coca-Cola and would travel to Atlanta for business. They are really cool, fun, and innovative. Also the weed references aren't just innuendos, they actually mimic it in their beer. And while they don't literally brew their beer with pot, they use stuff like hop resin in their Hop Hash beer, and in the G13 they tried to mimic the weed strain with the hops. I bought a bike jersey from them last time I went. |

Can't say no to 9% ABV!
In 2015 they lowered the ABV to 7.5%, which has evidently lessened the appeal of 'tramp juice' to the crack head population; the one's in my neighbourhood seem to stick to two litre bottles of off-brand cider. Or maybe it's just piss, I don't know. Probably not much difference. |

The local Peaservice station was carrying the 420 Strain in pint cans for a while, and I grabbed those up until they stopped. :( |

Tropicalia is brewed here in ATL. Hopefully it is sold up there, I think you are geographically up from here. It's by Creature Comforts they are pretty solid.
also note Sweetwater just got sold this month,
"Atlanta-born SweetWater Brewing announced on Wednesday they are in the process of being sold to a cannabis company. Aphria Inc, based in Leamington, Ontario announced they will purchase the brewery, located on Ottley Dr. in Northeast Atlanta, for $300 million" |

I'll be damned. Yes, I am about an hour northwest of Chattanooga, so I'm geographically up, lol. I'll keep an eye out for the Creature Comforts stuff. Thanks for the heads up! |

Yeah, cider was the other one that sprang to mind. Back when I lived in the UK there was a brand called White Lightning, at 8 or 9 percent ABV, and packaged in 3 litre bottles. I heard it was discontinued, but it was definitely popular with the homeless alcoholics. Absolutely foul stuff, lol. |
