stupid question about 56k

when I'm d/l or u/l something it starts of @ about 12k-15k, but it slowly decreases down to about 5k and I was wondering is there anyway I can get it to maintain that 12k speed?

Actually it never is going at 12k, it just says it is because when you click to download, and you are choosing where to save the file to, it is actually downloading during that time. So say it takes you 10 seconds to choose where to put the file, once the progress bar shows up, it thinks its only been going for 1 second meanwhile it has been 10.. and slowly the time averages off so it looks like your speed is dropping.. but it is not.

It is possible to download 10-12k/sec on a modem, but it involves modem compression :) Will never work when downloading mp3's cos they're compressed like a bitch, but i just downloaded GTA 3, and for the last 200meg of CD2 i was downloading at 12k/sec. What happens is the file is compressed before being sent from the server side, we download at 5.5k/sec, but when the modem uncompresses it on our side, it'll come to 12k. This process is invisible to Windows (window's doesn't know its happening) so it says it's downloading at 12k/sec

yup PointyDC is spot on! the only way you could slightly increase your modem speeds is to minimize the distance from the phone socket, and dont have to many phones on the same line.
