That argument works both ways. I could ask how often firefighters program applications in C++/VB.
If you believe that salary should be based on the risk these people are putting themselves under, then surely the highest paid profession should be a stuntman or something?:) |

So do you also think that the entire NHS are entitled to 40% salary increases as well? |

Boring economic Explanation
!) There is a large supply of firefighters, so it is currently more important to invest in the nurse and teacher crises. Will a massive lack of staff. This is a lot more important
2)Where is this extra money for the huge pay increase coming from. usually increased taxs, which most people dont like to pay
3) If firefighters get a 40% pay rise it will mean that teachers, nurses, doctors would all expect a pay rise, because they would feel their job is just as important
4)Firefighting is not a full time job, and most have second jobs, which isnt because they have poor wages, more because they have the time to get them
5)Due to substitutionn effects it may in the long run cause a drop in firefighters.
Anyway that is why they shouldnt
A 11% rise has been offered, which would mean they are payed around the same as teachers, nurses etc. So i think they should have accepted that
I think that 40% is madness, yes they risk their life everyday, but they dont have much stress with their job like teachers and nurses.
Anyway i think they should get payed in line with other public services, but 40% is way too much for how mnay hours they work for, and the fact that atm the goverment cant afford it, which could effect education, health, or mean even higher taxs
So that is the economic view
hehe

I think nurses need to get payed more to compete with the private hospitals. But that isn the main problem, it is the fact they have to deal with people dying everyday, a lot of nasty things, and telling the people wot has happened to their 4 year old child, or mother etc.
So not a very nice job at all, and with long hours this doesnt help
So pay is not the only factor involved with the problem atm
Ahh wot is economics doing to me :conf: |

sorry mate but thats a ing stupid thing to say. neo's got it right but there is no way to change all that , whoever takes a commanding position will be in the position to exploite what theyre given, and with shear amount of people in positions to dicate where our money goes we'll never stop spending it on .
Firefighters have free accomodation remember, one bedroom but still free, still cost around £250/month atleast to live elsewhere. and dont they work 4 days on and 4 days off? as someone else said alot have part time jobs, so they want a nice 40% bumf and then their foreigners aswel? and its quite rare they'll be called to a burning building, most the time its a car crash bolt cutters, someone stuck somewhere etc
I think they deserve prolly abit more than the police, but for the amount of hours and rareity of such a serious case i think 40% is bang out of order. |

| i think 40% is too much, but 20% would be a good figure, the thing is it never gets raised so it should beraised a little bit each year to avoid all this crap! |
