Why trance sounds better with large rooms / outdoors?

I typically used to just blast trance in my little crummy house and no matter how loud it got, it always sounded flat.

however recently i had the chance to play in a large banquet room and the sounds were amplified much better, in a room with very tall walls, you can really feel the sounds traveling and bouncing off the walls better

and MOST recently i took my speakers outdoors, and blasted it outside where there was NO walls and it sounded almost as good, if not better. way better than wearing headphones. so what's the audiophile science behind this anyway?

You also have to consider that maybe you're in a better mood when you're out of the house. :p

hahaha you're mostly right on that, but i really do think there's some sort of special way that sound travels is you're in a room with tall ceilings (or even just outdoors). i wish i knew this sooner, i would've been able to enjoy many many nights instead inside some small ass house

Everything sounds nicer with a little reverb 🤍

have always preferred headphones myself. the bass in clubs just swallows the rest of the track.

Sound waves can interact with the physical characteristics of a room ... room resonance frequencies, reflections, standing waves ... they can affect the perceived frequency response and lead to uneven bass response or unwanted coloration of the sound. An open air setting typically lacks the reflective surfaces and boundaries that contribute to these room-specific acoustic problems ... I think that is one of the main reasons why everything seems to sound nicer outdoors.

In a club and in confined indoor spaces low-frequency sounds, like the bass, can build up and become exaggerated because of reflections and resonance. This can sound quite bad. 😞

On the other hand, I have heard poor sound at outdoor events as well, when someone turned up the gain knobs into the realm of distortion, the sound system was crummy, and the DJ actually liked low-quality mp3s. ☹️ And I have heard great-sounding rigs at indoor events.
