Jack Moss - Back To Deep [Deep Trippy House]

The trance mixes I've been making for the last year or two have done really well in terms of plays, feedback and general ego-sustenance. There'll be more of those to come, because the great tunes keep landing. But in the meantime, I wanted to do something different, which showcases the deep, atmospheric, subliminal tunes I also love. This is at a much more relaxed 124bpm, similar to the Edale Mix I made last year. It contains a few tracks I've wanted to use in a set for years and years, and hopefully I've done them justice.

01. Mpeg - Back To B [Permanent Vacation]
02. Greed & Van Bellen - City Lights [Sog]
03. NTFO - Nothing To Lose [Bondage]
04. Anderson - Stalactites [Gestalt]
05. Alex Ranerro - Fragments [Bondage]
06. Wigs - Deep Exploration [Dream Software]
07. Northface - The Garden (Dub) [Mad Dog]
08. Dilby - Under Your Skin [Sublease]
09. Komartsov - Untitled 17 [Too Rough 4 Radio]
10. Frink - Dislate (Rhadow Remix) [Expmental]
11. DJ Tiesto - Suburban Train (Way Out West Remix) [Nebula]
12. New Phunk Theory - Dancer [Paper]
13. Tom Middleton - Goda Cee Yuu (Dub Mix) [Anjunadeep]

If I'd ever come to bounce to your records in a club I'd prefer this over the modern trance (though perhaps slightly faster than 124, and much longer than one CD length :toothless) - really nice. I have nothing useful to say re the technical aspect - I like to think I know what to expect of the mixing and structure of your "studio mixes" and there was no disappointment.
SYSTEM-J
I'm glad it's hitting the spot - I'm very pleased with it - but its rather pitiful play count in the first few days of its existence suggests that the masses want more trance.

Some things never change.

Greed & Van Bellen - City Lights!!!

Totally forgot about that masterpiece of a track.

Everything about this looks right up my alley, so I'll be listening later tonite!
Mr Game+Watch
This accompanied my commute today and... yeah... this may definitely be in my top 3 sets from you. Totally reminds me of those late nights in 2003 vibing to the warm, lush, deep, progressive house sounds of Sander Kleinenberg or Danny Howells. Highlights for me being City Lights and the Komartsov track. The WOW Suburban Train remix was a nice touch too; as the original is perhaps my favorite trance song of all time. I also didn't mind the "CD Length" of the mix, in fact it slotted in perfectly for my drive to and from the office.

I just hope the low playcount doesn't discourage you from making mixes of a similar style in the future.
SYSTEM-J
Thanks man, that's high praise. You've also picked out the two tunes I've wanted to use for years - City Lights and the WOW mix of Suburban Train. Both absolute classics for me that I've been waiting for a chance to do proper justice to.
OrangestO
Props for gifting City Lights. Have played it a few dozen times tonight with such excitement for "finding" it. Wow, what a special record. Original bpm flies but you played it perfect. Cheers.

Listened to the mix earlier and enjoyed it. I play more in this style so could use that as an excuse to critique it closely. I won't. Like all your mixes.

I've thought of picking your brain about creating studio mixes but now it seems easier using AI. What do you think of that? Think I'll stick to trying to perfect the live mix.

Anyway, I'm almost ready to share my own soon. Almost.
SYSTEM-J
A studio mix as in put together entirely in a DAW? If so, don't ask me - it's been about seven years since I made one like that, and the software I was using was horribly primitive - something I downloaded as a teenager in 2006. I wasn't even aware you can use AI now, although I don't really see where the creative satisfaction would come from.

There is one slightly rough transition in this set - it's definitely live and definitely open to critique. I deliberately let the flow be quite loose, so there may be moments where it feels like I kill the momentum slightly. Once you start building up a head of steam while mixing it's very easy to end up in peak time mode almost by accident.
OrangestO
Ah, I presumed you mixed them in a DAW unless stated otherwise. Mr. Midlothian also planted the seed in my head before listening to this. Anyway, great work. I rarely comment but always listen and enjoy.

Totally get the remark about building up a head of steam while mixing... yes, it's very easy to end up in peak time mode almost by accident haha. The great ones have patience, eh.

As for the AI stuff, the software I found (dj.studio/) is mostly geared toward DJs using it for radio show mixes and such, but we all know the way that will go.

I was listening to Speedy J's interview on Scuba's podcast today. He curates the STOOR show. Perhaps with AI infesting the scene, this will be the way forward for future parties. A group of artists gathering to produce and mix live without a prior objective other than to be authentic. Or just a lone DJ doing it like some do but that standard becoming the norm for anyone who wants to achieve the same. The whole bit of people standing around the DJs and seeing each other rather than facing forward seems like a concept that could gain momentum in the future once people get tired of the happening now. I digress..

SYSTEM-J
Yeah, I think he just meant the pre-planned mixes I do, rather than recordings of me live at whatever grimy party I've been lucky enough to play at.

The subject of AI mixing is a big one, arguably too big for this thread about my own mix. Would make a decent topic in Music Discussion. Software has existed for 20 years or so that auto-mixes tracks together if you just pick the setlist. I'm not sure what "AI" does that improves on this. Probably more interesting is the question of AI actually selecting the music and mixing it, which I'm sure will be possible in the future. Hell, it's only a step beyond Spotify's algorithm.

Is there a place for that in the scene, both from a business and an audience perspective? I'm skeptical. Okay, clubs would save on booking fees by not paying for a famous DJ, but it's the famous DJ who sells tickets. If I started a "progressive trance" night in Manchester and didn't book any well known names, not many people would turn up just because of a genre tag. And while punters are often too mashed to particularly care what a DJ is doing behind the decks, I think good DJing still involves the reading of the room, not just to decide which track to play next but how to mix it in. A really good DJ knows how to generate or dissipate energy with a transition, not just a selection. I think AI is a long, long way from ever being able to understand a room full of human emotion in that way.

What I can see is websites or streaming services having AI DJs that select recommendations algorithmically and auto-mix them. I'm sure the technology is already there to make that happen. That would work for the home listener who wants a reliable source of tunes to flow while they're working, or in a café as background music. But in a proper nightclub? I don't see how it improves anything.

Apols for my faulty seed.
