I picked up a behringer model d and im quite pleased with it, although I miss the uhh key filter tracking or whatever soft-synths usually provide, as I cant make it scream in the upper registers. I havent dug too deep in the overloading section, but I dig the sound it offers albeit in a limited range.
I would like a virus ti snow I think.

I haven't exactly been working a lot of music in recent years, but I did build myself a really nice 12-core AMD PC. So I can throw just about any VSTi at it that I want. Both of those things resulted in selling off some of my synths.
Right now, I'm mostly down to the synths that I don't think I'll ever bother to sell. They're either not worth a lot, a little broken so worth even less, or I just simply can't bare to part.
Currently on deck:
* Roland JP8000 -- the outputs need to warm up before they work. maybe it has another decade in it before the outputs go, but I don't know. I could probably still get $400 for it, but I like it too much.
* Nord Rack 3 -- built like a tank, still works perfectly. easily $800 after fees. The NL3 will always be my favorite.
* Behringer Pro-800 -- fully working, worth $250 after fees. not worth selling, and it's a fun synth.
* Roland SH-01A -- fully working, worth $150 after fees. not worth selling, sounds great but it's limited.
* Roland JP-08 -- a little beaten up, but still usable. worth $150 after fees. sounds great, very versatile.

only hw synths I have are the 2X and the Q - really the only time I use them is if I go into ambient mode, the Q is great for this as you can knob twiddle and morph your sound this way and that
For techno and stuff these days I just default to sw, tbh it's just quicker to get things done, i will map maybe 3 or 4 parameters over all in Live to my nektar
I would recommend getting some hw though (if you have the space too) it can just give you some new impetus or whatever - you just cannot beat actual tactile knobs per parameter for sound design

im looking at sequencer / sampler options
nothing is coming out as a clear winner especially under $500
need polyphony upon sampling. lots of these samplers play mono, even the digitakt. I know there are workarounds for every sampler, but workflow suffers.
the closest thing I've found for the price is the te ko ep133.

Akai MPC One?

yea idk, I dont see much difference in using a computer and daw / midi controller at that point. its also large, and above my budget.
ableton move is another option im looking at. Idk why all these companies gimp their devices, the novation circuit could be good but lacking basic workflow logic.
at least with the te guys, it looks like they actually make music themselves.

im having quite some trouble deciding which direction to go with a setup.
2 mono synths into an interface and use a daw?
grab a sequencer/sampler/drum machine/groovebox/effects unit that takes the 2 monosynths?
or use a mixer with sends and a drum machine and a step sequencer for the model d?
doesnt matter i guess, if i suck in the box ill suck out the box too.

after done researching im probably gonna go for a digitakt, work in mono for now.
