I think it originated in online gaming, gamers wanted to post things like where the good servers were without having the search engines hit them. 1337 is a conversion of the text LEET, or elite. If you are 1337, you are elite or good (like at tribes or UT or CS). I see owned a lot too, made into 0\/\/|\|3d. Check out this converter here:
