Looking into the Sun (big picture)

Found this on an astronomy website. They are the most detailed pictures of the sun ever taken. Awesome pics.
For those of you using the thread preview feature to read this, its a large pic, so if you have a slow modem, you may not want to read this thread.

Hey 2 questions just pop:
-How comes there is shadow on the sun?
-If the sun is burning with fire, does it mean it has lots of oxygen on it? |

The "shadow" is where it's not burning as hot as the bright parts.
The sun doesnt really burn, hydrogen molecules are destroyed in millions of nuclear reactions. |

Answer to question 2(taken from another website):
The burning we see in fires on Earth is due to oxygen combining with a chemical in the fuel - heat is released by the reaction and the hot material radiates light. In the Sun, the heat comes from a different sort of reaction called nuclear fusion, in which the nuclei (the inner parts) of atoms collide and fuse together. Each fusion reaction releases a million times as much energy as a single chemical reaction - that is how Sun can burn so brightly and for so long (about 10 billion years).
As for the first question, if you're talking about the large black spot, I believe that is a sunspot. A sunspot is an area on the surface of the sun that is somewhat cooler than the surrounding area. I think it has something to do with magnetic fields and such on the sun. If you're really interested in learning more there are plenty of sites on the net that can give you more information than I can. |

The "shadow" is a sunspot, just an area thats much cooler. It looks wierd because of some anomaly it sends off that I cant remember.
Btw that picture is many many KM across, that sunspot is actually very huge.
EDIT: roughly 25,000 KM across, to be more precise |
