Whats up TAs. just got a take home test and needed alittle help w/ some of the questions? Thansk in advance for any replies.
1.Which of the following is characteristic of enzymes?
a.They raise the energy activation of a reaction by binding the substrate.
b.They raise the amount of energy present in the substrate
2.If there re 12 diff. intermediate products produced in the stages for production of a molecule in a cell, we can expect that there:
a.is one enzyme that carries this process through to the end product.
b.is one enzyme for degradation and another fr synthesis.
c.must be 12 diff. raw materials combined in the cell by one enzyme.
d.are about 12 enzymes, at least one responsible for each step in teh metabolic pathway
3.Coupling occurs when the energy released by an exergonic reaction is
a.used to drive another exergonic reaction
b.used to drive an endergonic reaction
c.lost as nonusable heat to the environment
d.used to decrease the entrophy of the universe
e.all above
4.If all teh sunlight that struck the earth's surface was (temporarily) absorbed and none was immediatly reflected back into space then:

i am not even going to guess on this one.

this one is either a or d. a is definitely true but the other two answers are worded oddly.

that is a reatarded analogy but true

i am pretty sure this is false. i think the cell has specific places for reactions.

this is kind of true. the activation energy is necessary to start a reaction.
don't take any of these answers with too much weight. i was never really a biology person. why don't you try using your text book for the answers? |

Worth a try, a good number of ppl browse through this section.
As for the text book, that thing is like reading morse code, I've only found several of the answers w/ it.

1. A, well its sort of right, its definately not A. The correct answer should be: Enzymes DECREASE activation energy of a reaction by binding to the substrate.
2. i think its D, not sure about this one.
3. B
4. I think A or D. Although the idea in C would be correct if it stated that plants would absorb more light than just blue and red wavelengths.
5. I think True

Both of the choices are incorrect, however if I had to choose one, I'd choose (b). Enzymes lower the activation eneregy of reaction and therefore help the reaction occur. If the energy of activation is increased, the reaction is less likely to occur. The enzyme does restructure the substrate such that significant functional groups are in proximity to each other, leading to the formation of the product.

This question is too vague. Yes, chemical reactions occur randomly within the cell, but specific groups of chemical reactions are compartamentalized (i.e. cellular metabolism primarily takes place in the mitochondria; degregation in the lysozomes but the mixing of chemicals within those compartments is random)

True (If by interact you mean the formation of products.)

here are my answers..1-a 2-a not sure about it..3-b 4-d 5-True 6-false they occur in the cytoplasm and the matrix of the mitochondria
