Worst Dj Night Ever!!!!!

I was one of the 4 DJ's at my fraternity party at San Diego State University, in Southern California. I was Djing from 11pm-12:20am (prime time). I get on the decks and start playing the horrible main stream hip-hop that people like around here. Played songs such as Britney Spears - Boys and other track such as that. Chicks were going crazy and it was tight. Then everything goes wrong.
First - Some takes out the power cord by accident.
Second - I next decide to switch it up and play some trance. I start out with Push - The Legacy to hopefully get a nice clubby feeling going. Immediatly the dance floor begins to die down and chicks rush to the both instantly all saying "Can you play some hip-hop". I pretty much say yes to them all, but don't mean it.
Third - I mix in Yahel vs DJ Miss T - Going Up. This song for me right now has the best build up ever. The song is just the . During the build up, over a hundred people begin to chant "Hip-Hop, Hip Hop" over and over and over. I am now ing pissed.
Four - I say these people, throw on a hip-hop song and decide to just get ed out I dig behind the DJ both to grab my six-pack and its not there. It turns out that this other ghetto ass hip-hop DJ stole them. Deciding not to fight, which could ruin some very expensive equipment (DJM-600 and M3d's)
Five - I go upstairs, take 10 shots to the dome and I don't remember a thing. I woke up the next morning with makeup and writing on my face.

!!!!!! that's so terrible, man... my condolences
hip hop!! :whip: :whip: :whip:
but i'd say a big lesson here is - if you're not absolutely positive that what you're going to spin (i.e. trance) will be appreciated at whatever club/gig you're at, then don't go at all. i know it's hard to find a place where people actually want to hear trance in north america, but it's your best bet. :( |

yea, stay true to yourself
one thing i've learned is to spin for yourself first, do what makes you happy, then think about what the crowd wants to hear
if you're not spinning things you like, then you're in it for the wrong reasons
i'm not saying ignore the crowd alltogether, but if you're booked to play, then the people there should appreciate your style of music...
if anytyhing, it's the person who threw the party's fault
as a promoter, you need to look at your clientelle, and figure out what they want to hear and who can give them what they want to hear
obviously a hip hop dj is what they needed/wanted
why choose a trance dj and then have him/her play hip hop, just doesn't make sense to me
you also need to pick and choose your gigs... when someone asks you to play, let them know what you spin...
if you do spin hip hop, then stick with what you were hired for
do you catch what i'm saying?
if you're not playing what you enjoy playing, that's going to come through your mixing, and you're going to have a ty night... |

| Yeah I know the feeling man, hip hop. I still have respect for scratching and turntablism (wicked stuff) but I hate situations like the one you described. A dj at my college's pub (I go to York U) is trance crazy but he's forced to play pub night garbage tunes (top 40, hip hop crap etc) and last year he occasionally through in some wicked trance tunes, this year I asked him to do the same when I was there, he didn't...because the people there weren't into it like last year. BAH!:whip: So all we have to do now is throw a trance night at York...and that'll be that. I mean we have a jungle night (been there, was fun as hell) |

| I have mixed feelings about spinning hip hop.....the place I play it is mianly into hip hop which forces me to move my Electronica set closer to the end of the night. This is really no problem for me but I hate when ppl start saying, Put some hip hop on or Hey, can u play that rap song that sounds like this *makes and effort to sing* I'm like WTF, leave me alone and go get wasted, I've played hip hop for the past 5 hours now its time to please my Electronica fans. In the end, it all works out and everyone is happy though.....:D |

Sounds like a very similar incedent that happened to one of my friends,,, he ended up purposely train-wrecking,,, then turned up the volume really loud and gave the crowd the finger and walked out.
Can I get a " HIP-HOP!!!"

| I'm over it. I was more ticked off from the other DJ stealing my beers. I knew trance would kill the dance floor, but the chant just to me was a diss to the best music in the world - TRANCE! |
