Advice: Production or DJ'ing

| well i'm sorta gonna enter the music scene..but i don't have much money so here's the question: should i invest in production (i would really like to remix) or should i invest in DJ equipment so i get a job as a DJ (i'm taking DJ classes and i often participate in DJ championships..kinda) i can only turn to one choice. i also thought in buying DJ equipment and with the job earn some money to then invest in production..=D what's your opinion? how did u start ? |

I started with producing.. went over to DJing, and then I'm back into Producing (more than I DJ at least).
They are really two entirely seperate things.. Personally, I like producing more than DJing. Less pressure is on you because you're not preforming live infront of an audience.
In my own opinion, DJing is about practicing, learning skills, and then displaying them infront of an audience. Producing is about developing creativity and raw talent. Now Im not saying there is no creativity or talent in DJing, but i just feel producing is more based upon them.
No doubt, they both require alot of time and money.. but you should really decide what to do based on what you enjoy more. It's also good to do both if you have the opertunity, because some skills and techniques are interchangeble.

im in the same predicament as you are RenderedDream, i don't know whether to go into producing or concentrate on dj'ing. Is it possible to do both? i mean, with producing can't you just buy a software program and be done with it, that can't be too expensive, or is there other equipment that is necessary for it to work out.
Also, will one be to time consuming for it to be possible to do the other at the same time, i guess not, i mean just look at armin, tiesto etc... they all dj and produce.....

tiesto and PVD also have truck loads of cash
what you can do is dl Trackor and Reason and they try them both out and whatever you like better pursue
i produce and live djing is hella hard for me but i do like to mix songs together in programs like acid for instance where its not live
THIS IS HOW MUCH ITS GOING TO COST:
(prices subject to change because i did no research)
legal way:
to produce (without serious limitations) you need a good computer and software for the minimun id say about $1500 worth combined PLUS sofware upgraids ($100-500 a year persay)
to dj for gigs you need at a minimum two turntables a mixer an amp and speekers (im not taking you all as idiot im trying to make a point)id say at a minimum about $750 total PLUS vinal or cds ($30 or so a week if you are serious) - (money from gigs which you wont get untill you are good (ruffly 2 years to get good)) SO lets do some math
producing cost for one year = 1500 + (100 to 500)
djing cost for one year = 750 + (30 or so * 52 weeks per year)
Cost TOTALS
production = $1600 to 2000 per year (for me its about 2500 a year)
djing = around $2310 per year (for my friend its about 500 a year plus burned cds)
illegal way:
production
dl software for free steel moms computer
FREE
DJ
jack turn tables(or dl trackor and steel moms computer), DL and burn cds, jack dads old speakers and amp
FREE
Cost TOTALS
FREE
FREE - (money you get from djing)
i personaly recomend a comination of both legal and illegal way
most people dj first i think because when they are going to start producing they have a cristal cleer adea of how a song is mixed and the sounds used

i would reccomend djing first
you get to know the music, feel how it works, and what sounds good vs what doesn't sound good
you also figure out how to make your songs mix better and stuff like that
unless you already know the music inside and out and are quite comfortable and creative enough to start making music

| well but there's also the probability that if i invest in DJ'ing..and don't find a job or anything..the equipment will be useless..sure i can be entertaining but useless cause i won't make any money of it..and to sell it..it will be hard to find someone that will buy those expensive thingies...but in production it would be like a hobbie and more useful..what's my point is DJ'ing=dream and production=hobbie..if i buy dj'ing i'm not sure if it's gonna work |

I had planned to DJ and play some of my tunes in my sets, since I think that would be the best thing you could do to promote your work (both as DJ and producer) - the only reason I didn't go on with it was because my parents almost kicked me out of my house :p They let me produce, but they think that if I dj, I'll become a drug dealer :rolleyes:

Yea, my mate has Reason and he loves it. Soon he wants to buy some equipment and get into real producing. He also tried out DJ'ing but decided that producing is the best way forward for him.. |
